There's a point where a batsman feels comfortable to do it and do it well. Once you are "in", then it's a pretty easy way to go about it. There's a good argument that it's not the best way to get yourself "in"; starting with defensive instincts can lead to indecisiveness, getting stuck on the crease, etc.

Sure but it's a case of different strokes really. If a batsman is capable of application, they can go and go from dot one, all AB and Kallis in Adelaide.

Ab played an indecisive shot yesterday. But the risk of indesiciveness sits right next to the risk of a loose shot.

The only argument to "play your natural game" that is valid to me is that it wastes more time. But there's clearly risk/reward trade-off in that.

Maybe it forces the opposition captain to spread the field. But if you're prepared to back yourself dead-batting, you go for it. Especially somebody ABdV and Faf who clearly have the ability.

Kallis played a few shots in Adelaide

It was only really ABDV who simply blocked everything bowled at him
