See Finn was economical even if he didn't get the wickets in the opening day of his Otago debut. He got through 21 overs, taking 1-43. Respectable enough.

Steve Finn, Otago's English import, had a largely unspectacular start to his Plunket Shield career. He was quick but didn't make the batsman play enough in his opening two spells.

It made his figures look good as he was by far the most economical of the quicks but as far as the strike weapon Otago hoped him to be, he was lacking and largely ineffective. He did come back well and got the valuable wicket of Nicol with a good length ball that forced Nicol into a mistake.
Manipower Oval is a complete road anyway, he could have done a lot worse.

It seems Notts remain favourites to land James Taylor from Leicester, although no compensation package has been agreed apparently. With Trent Bridge being assured of two Ashes Tests in the next few years, they will be in a better position to meet the compensatory fee.

Chris Nash has extended his contract at Hove, staying there till at least the end of 2014 season. Good rewards for a decent season across all formats last season. His CC average would look much healthier if he cashes in more frequently on the starts he makes, but he does have the capability of getting Sussex off to a bit of a flier at the top of the order. His CB40 form was outstanding.

Steve Finn is having a good day at the office. 2/10 from six overs, including the important wickets of Nicol (lbw) and Fulton (bowled). Canterbury currently 58/9 at Rangiora which is not known for being bowler friendly.

Wagner 4/32 from nine overs has been the star.

Quite a contrast to their first innings, glad Finn has a couple to his name. Pitch deterioration ?

Rangiora is usually pretty flat but you'd have to wait until the media articles come out to know if it got nicer for the bowlers.

Wagner just finished them off, taking his fifth wicket to bowl them out for 61, so Finn won't get a chance for his third.

Azhar Mahmood is one player Kent are not willing to let go. He has extended his current deal by two years. Was very handy in OD cricket last season, and did well with the bat in the CC. He is 37 now, and I'm sure he will help in the development of a lot of the promising youngsters at Kent.

Durham's Phil Mustard is heading out to Zimbabwe to replace Hampshire's Liam Dawson at Mountaineers. Dawson made quite an impression in his first game scoring a century and taking seven-wickets. Not much to live up to then Colonel ?

Shame about Dawson but he was feeling homesick, probably not the easiest place to tour so can understand. Would have been good to get some overs under his belt though, going to be asked to bowl more next year although Katich may play that role if recent form is anything to go by.

Absolutely, thought he would gain massively by spending five months over there, and as you say, presumably getting a lot of overs under his belt. Katich is bowling more for NSW than I've known him do for quite some time so could be quite a handy part-timer next year.

Don't think he realised that the team he signed up for was one based out in the middle of nowhere, most of the other guys out there go to Harare or Bulawayo

The James Taylor move to Notts is being held up, albeit temporarily, as the sides try and agree a compensatory fee to release Taylor from the final year of his contract from Leicestershire. His current side have rejected Notts' initial offer, and will no doubt hold out for a more inflated figure, and who can blame them. They invest a lot of time, effort and money into developing their young players, it strikes me as wrong that they can then walk away for a small fee. Leicester haven't given up hope of him staying for another year at Grace Road, but a move is likely, Leicester just showing they will not be walked over by the clubs with more financial clout, but I'm sure they will accept a more suitable compensation fee. Not sure what the figure is that's been offered.

Warwickshire, another side interested in signing Taylor, have secured Jeetan Pater as their overseas player for the duration of the season. There are obvious positives in signing an overseas player that will be with you throughout the season, rather than using two or three players that are only there for the short-term. Patel impressed in his short spell last season in the CC, he took five wickets in an innings in his first game against Sussex, then against the same side took 10 wickets in the game. He only played one more game against Lancs. Whether he'll have the same kind of impact over the course of an entire season remains to be seen, but Warwickshire are clearly pleased he's returning.

Ian ****bain, David Payne and Liam Norwell have all signed extended contracts at Gloucester, while Ian Saxelby, who was out of contract, has signed a new three-year deal. Gloucester keen to invest in their youngsters as they continue to develop.

I think Essex have made an excellent signing today, luring Charl Willoughby to Chelmsford on a two-year deal. It should relieve some of the pressure from the shoulders of the hugely consistent David Masters, and along with Graham Napier, should give Essex a pretty good attack in Division Two.

Perhaps more importantly is the potential impact Willoughby could have on Essex's two very promising left-armers Reece Topley and Tymal Mills. Sharing the knowledge that he has accumulated over the years and the fact that Topley and Mills will be able to watch Willoughby up close can only benefit them.

Didn't expect Willoughby to leave Taunton at all, though in hindsight I'm not sure why. Very handy attack for a second division side, that.

Think he's done enough hard yards on that Taunton track! I believe Essex have been talking to him for a while, they also managed to beat off a number of other counties for his signature, which is a good thing for a side that struggled in the CC last season.

Phil Mustard has also had an immediate impact for Mountaineers. Selected as a specialist batsman, Mustard opened the innings and made 105 (14x4's, 3x6's) off 115 balls, giving his side 183 run lead with five first innings wickets still remaining. Top start Colonel!
