Errr that was precisely for national reasons... not for money. Ludicrous to compare the two.

Yes, this is true, but the fear isn't so much that international cricket will die out or decline; it's that Test cricket specifically will. I believe David Warner had an overseas IPL contract before he'd played a First Class match (or around about the same time as his debut anyway). IPL teams will always scout from international competitions but that doesn't necessarily have to be Tests.

The situation we have at the moment - largely anyway - is that players develop their long-form games primarily and work on those core skills, then try to adapt them to limited overs cricket the best they can. I think we'll slowly but surely see a shift to the reverse of that whereby players focus on their T20 skills in order to make the big bucks and then try to adapt them to the longer form when they play Tests. This will have a profoundly negative effect on the quality, appreciation and importance of Test cricket IMO and that would disastrous from my perspective.

Of course, I wouldn't blame the players for doing that at all. It's their livelihood we're talking about here; it'd be disappointing from a selfish perspective but I wouldn't find the idea morally wrong. I'd blame the cricket boards, ICC and the overall administration of cricket for fostering an environment whereby T20 skills were of the highest value.

This is exactly the way I feel about it. I love test matches but I would never blame the players for choosing the format that means they can make the most money in their careers.

As an aside, I do wish that really young Aus players weren't over in the IPL. I'm hoping Geoff Marsh doesn't play his son Mitchell in the first 11 for Pune at all.

Or he'll end up like his brother and be a short format specialist.

I hope you are not acting deliberately stupid. Players arent getting rested for Ipl, but for future series, particularly test series.

while you talk about nationalism, ipl means more to india than an odi series in west indies, that's also nationalism.

So he left to better his game in FC cricket?
Point is the Aussie board has precedent of holding back their prime players. iirc Ponting too didnt play that series, nor did watto. wasnt that too incredibly selfish? or was it not?

Funny how you say Spark is being stupid and then talk about 'nationalism' whilst making it clear you don't know what the word means. You really do make a rod for your own back.

And what does that have to do with the IPL?

Do you have any idea what nationalism is btw?

I don't think he was directly "calling" him anything, FWIW. Just voicing his opinion that the IPL = ****, IMO.
