Muttiah Muralidaran's 10 top batsmen

I look forward to Harbhajan making this list and people asking why Ponting wasn't in the top 10 tbh

And this is exactly why you're acting silly.

I'm not punishing anyone. I'm explaining why Murali would have rated Sachin higher on the list than Ponting, and you're the one trying to use stats against me when it's Murali's friggin list.
.
What reason did you give for Murali rating him higher?

This will sound biased but I'm a bit surprised not to see Fleming on the list. In test cricket Fleming pwnd Sri Lanka.
I am surprised as well..
Apart from Lara and Sehwag, Fleming's double in Sri Lanka is one of the best knocks against Sri Lankan spin attack I have seen

FFS. All I did was explain why Murali has made his list. He probably felt he didn't get too much help out of the wickets against Ponting and held it against Ponting in Australia. That doesn't mean it's right.

You call Sachin fans sensitive, Jeez.
I was showing that it was debatable that was the reason why.

Don't think it unreasonable at all that Sachin is rated higher than Ponting by Murali. Just think it's hard to believe not one Australian made his list.

I wasn't saying that you said he was a bad player of spin. I am just saying it's interesting that Ponting has been really successful against Murali. Arguably as good as Sachin. Yet there seems to be this view as if he can't play it that well. Chill out man :p

You could use statsguru to get their averages against spin bowling against Sri Lanka. Would be a pretty good estimate.

Although the sample sizes kinda suck. One dodgy decision or let off can make a huuuge difference. Murali knows best here.
Across that many batsmen? Seems far-fetched.

I said that Murali probably took into account the fact that Sachin played him well on spin friendly Indian wickets. I have no proof, was just offering a reason.

Murali is a legend. But legends also some time serve rank ****. FFS it's his opinion, if we agree it's ****, then be it. He's not gonna change it on what we think of it.

Yeh I saw that, but I intially added them up manually, and I am still getting 55.6. With a not out you literally double the score and still divide the total by 10 innings right?
That link has his not out score. With a not out, you just add the runs to the total runs and minus 1 from the total amount of innings when dividing.

TBF, not really at all that concerned about his list. Just think his explanation why an Aussie wasn't in there would be interesting as I think the question is certainly legit.

Nah Statsguru knows more than Murali

I think it's a good point though. There are times when a bowler has had a batsman early but was dropped or not given out. That batsman then goes on to score but the bowler may just never rate them.

I know my best mate, who is the opening bowler of my team, refused to rate a batsman who scored an amazing 180-odd against us. In the third over he was dropped by our keeper, and also a close LBW shout wasn't given. When we were talking about his knock after the game my mate just continued to stress (in a Richard-esque manner tbh) that he was out twice and his 180 was lucky.

Who knows how many times Murali has rated a player lower than he should because he felt he was on top of him, even though he got runs.

Yeh but statistically, as was shown, that is a pretty groundless argument. I just think its the century count Sachin has to his advantage, plus the fact that it seems pretty damn rare for Ponting to be given any credit from other players. It also seems somewhat of a defualt position these days to automatically put Tendulkar and Lara high up in these lists (mostly with good reason, but in some cases, perhaps not so much so).

Sorry, I just saw the second line of your post and was replying thinking you said 1 dodgy decision could turn the averages around, hence my reply.

BTW, how would you go about getting their averages v Sri Lanka (spin bowling)?

Ponting being a poor player of spin is a myth, really. He has only struggled against Harbhajan in that one series.

Come on now.

Sachin and Lara, by almost everyone's accounts, and this has been said for many years, are two of the best players of spin bowling in the last 20-30 years.

I find it quite sensible that they'd top both Warne and Murali's lists.

Using the Cricinfo stat average against a bowler is the most stupidest and inaccurate method of evaluating a player against a particular bowler.

Sourav Ganguly averages in the high 70s against. Much better than Sidhu and Azhar for example, but Murali would know who played his bowling better. I would much rather rely on Murali's list than use Cricinfo statistics.

It is his list, and he is entitled to make one, and i don't think it is even worth debating this.
