CricketWeb Tennis - Season I

David

International 12th Man
Drake pushing the Ox for best player in CW.. Should be an interesting race. Blanco, 8 wins, all on clay... A man about to be shown his flaws, one thinks.

That was a heap of poo from Mustard. He should have won that final. At least he got some consolation in the doubles final. Mustard extends his thanks to Davis for a fine tournament together. Hopefully they can continue to play well together.

Indianapolis draw released

ATP World No. 1 Daniel Paez Blanco heads a stellar draw for the Indianapolis Tennis Championships which includes two Grand Slam champions and nine ATP World Tour champions. Blanco is set for a semifinal showdown against Wimbledon champion Darcy Cowan, but the dream matchup could be upset by the addition of injury plagued American Rick Henson. Elsewhere, the first round will see an amazing match between the Wimbledon runner up and a quarterfinalist at The Championships as Radek Spidla and Kim Vollan face off.

Hamburg draw released

The prestigious Hamburg Open gets underway with a stellar 48-strong field headed by former World No. 1 Jason Hall. Hall faces a tough assignment in the quarterfinals if he wants to claim his second clay title of the season with World No. 10 Illya Altman looming likely. Elsewhere, Radivoj Daneu will look to avenge his semifinal loss last week in Båstad, but may be stopped as early as the third round with a match against the returning Li Wang the likely outcome. After missing the tournament in Båstad last week, CWLand's Sven Oxenstierna will look to prove his credentials against an all-star cast; a quarterfinal showdown with countryman Randy Smeltz a real possibility as the World No. 19 looks set for a Stuttgart rematch against Dwayne Murdoch. Whilst the sixteen seeded players receive byes into the second round, the likes of Oneil Stewart, Janos Varga and Gregor Gorshkov will be in action in the first round.

Yes, I know I've made the draws a bit too overpowered but I'm not changing them now. Bowenburg's streak of awesome draws continues. In Hamburg qualifying, second seed Alex de Wet has Xabier Jiminez in the first round. In Indianapolis qualifying, second seed Billy Spleen has Ricardo Couto first up. Vladimir Stakhanov has doubles superstar Ralph Robinson, and Scotland Rivers has UAE's Ali Ahmed. Finally, Matt Bre has Benoît Rio.

In Penza, fifth seed Spas Delev begins with a match against local Evgeniy Volkoff, and faces a possible quarterfinal against Czech Republic's Vaclav Zeman. Randy Banks starts off his qualifying campaign with a match against Mikhail Prokopenko.

I normally just take it one match at a time, but I fancy my chances of knocking out Blanco in the second round in Indiana.

Could be a short tournament for Mustard. If he makes it to the 2nd round he will likely face Cowan. Given he couldn't succeed in Mantra, we feel he will struggle at the Indy. He'll need to show more than he did in Mantra to go deep in this tournament.

Hoping for a quarter final match up against the Ox, may have beaten him last encounter? Or maybe that was Drake I'm thinking I beat.

Hamburg; Indianapolis; Penza Challenger (Qualification) - July 19-25 Season I

German Hamburg Open
Qualifiers - Hamburg

Second seed Alex de Wet's indifferent clay form has taken an embarrassing turn for the worse as he was beaten in straight sets in the first round of qualifying by world number 226 Xabier Jimenez. The CWLander served up double the errors that his Spanish opponent did; throwing away a 2-0 lead in the decider by missing a simple backhand volley. The Spaniard did his best to force de Wet to play the extra shots; the CWLander tumbling out in three sets 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Indianapolis Tennis Championships
Qualifiers - Indianapolis

Exciting CWLander Scotland Rivers has earned qualification to the main draw of his second ATP tournament in Indianapolis after a straight sets thrashing of countryman Billy Spleen in the qualifying round. The second seeded CWLander came into the contest fancying his chances after hard-fought matches in earlier rounds, but was stunned by the explosive Rivers who dropped just three games in the hour-long procession. Rivers had previously come from a set down in the second round to defeat Mexico's Felipe Pelayo, and used the near escape to lift his confidence in his third match of the weekend. Spleen, however, looked disinterested as Rivers dismantled his game by bullying him around the court to secure a 6-1 6-2 win.

Elsewhere, Vladimir Stakhanov gave up a one-set lead in his second round clash against Spleen - a complete opposite of his first round clash against Ralph Robinson. There Stakhanov was bagelled in the first set by the doubles star who thundered down an amazing sixteen aces. But once his serve was gone, he was never a chance as Stakhanov advanced 0-6 6-4 6-3. Stakhanov took the first in his match against compatriot Spleen, but could not keep the pressure on as Spleen advanced 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Finally, Matt Bre failed to build on his appearance Newport a fortnight ago as he was smashed in straight sets by Aussie fourth seed Pat Hewitt in the second round. Bre started well by coming from a set down to defeat Benoit Rio in the first round, but never worried Hewitt in a disappointing display as the Australian advanced to the qualifying round 6-2 6-0.

Penza Cup
Qualifiers - Penza

Randy Banks will this week compete in his maiden Challenger tournament after earning qualification to the main draw of the Penza Cup. Banks did it the hard way by defeating two seeded players en route to qualification; third seed Michal Greda, sixth seed Srdjan Ivic and Russian Mikhail Prokopenko falling to the inexperienced CWLander. After dropping a set to Prokopenko, Banks lifted his game in the second and qualifying rounds to complete a 6-3 6-4 win over the Serbian Ivic to set up a first round match with Polish player Piotr Bak.

  • Qualifiers: Randy Banks; Mykhaylo Martynenko; Fedot Shatalin; Joseph Tessier.

German Hamburg Open
First Round - Hamburg

Men's Singles (Seeds & Other Entrants - Seeds - Finals - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's Doubles (Draw)

Despite all the seeds receiving byes into the second round, the German Hamburg Open was not without its surprises in an enthralling start to the week. The highlight will no doubt be a hotly anticipated showdown between French Open semifinalist Juan Moreno and Roland Garros quarterfinalist Oneil Stewart who bounced back from a first round exit in Båstad with a straight sets win over Mark Harmel. The exciting Jamaican was last week upset by Hugh James, but started his Hamburg campaign off promisingly with a 6-4 6-4 thumping of the Belgian.

Randy Smeltz and Sergio Joaquin will face off in another promising second round clash after the Spaniard eased past Russian veteran Vladimir Gryzlov in straight sets. Joaquin and Smeltz recently met at a Challenger event in Poznan with the world number 19 prevailing in straight sets 6-3 7-6(4). Joaquin, however, looked much more assured in his start to the tournament as he convincingly defeated the 40-year old Russian whose dogged nature could not withstand a 6-1 7-6(5) defeat.

Four qualifiers made it through to the second round, but Johan Ortiz - who joins Carlos Gonza, Dieter Bonhof and Marc Carretero in the round of 32 - has the toughest task of all of them as he faces world number two Jason Hall. Ortiz, who some ranked as high as the twentieth best player at the start of the season, proved too good in his first round clash against Ukraine's Roman Dorogan; the Colombian showing some glimpses of his best form in the 6-1 3-6 6-4 upset. Promising Spaniard Marc Carretero will head into the second round hoping to cause a massive upset against twelfth seed Almen Benaglio after he also produced a win in three. Carretero last week impressed against compatriot Daniel Paez Blanco in Stuttgart, but looked disappointing in his first set against Jose Navarro. But the Peruvian fell away as Carretero grew in confidence to secure an impressive 2-6 7-5 6-1 win.

The Varga Brothers will compete as a duo for the first time since Paris this week in the doubles draw, but could find themselves pitted together in the third round after Janos Varga took a win over local Alex Peters in the match of the day. Varga was made to toil for his victory over the course of three hours as neither man was willing to give anything away. But ultimately, the Hungarian number three completed a victory in his first match back from injury to advance 6-3 5-7 6-4. To have any hope of facing his brother, the world number 41 must upset ninth seed Davis Kennedy. Zoltan Varga also has a tricky assignment as he faces Diego Hurtado of Colombia.
