Jane Saville 2000 Olympics - 20KM Walker disqualifed just metres out from the stadium entrance, in first place.

Terrible moment but the memory was great IMO, she handled it in a great way, the exact way I'd expect all Aussies athletes to be.

Was also thinking of voting Shane Kelly for his pedal slip and Laydown Sally lol.

Should change it to memorable moments imo, instead of "best". Because the most memorable moments aren't always the best (see laydown sally)

Nominate:

Cecil Healy 1912 Stockholm - silver in 100m freestyle.

Won a gold medal for Australia in the 4 x 200m freestyle.

Would have won a second gold in the 100m, but for his own good graces. The American team missed the semi finals owing to an error by their managers. Healy insisted on them being re-swum as it would have been unsportsmanlike to win in those circumstances.

The races were re-swum and he finished second - to an American.

He was killed in 1918 at the battle of Mont St Quentin.

Also noinate: that guy in the pistol shooting who won a gold medal right handed, lost his hand in ww2, then came back an won a gold medal shooting left handed. Dunno his name, but that's freakin' unbelieveable.

Burgey I just did some research on your pistol shooter guy, he didn't win gold with his right hand prerviously, but yeah he was a right handed shooter until losing his hand. Awesome effort though!

Also thanks Wright for changing the title.

Nominate: Carl Schumann 1896, best all round athlete ever?

Carl Schumann won three events in gymnastics (individual horse vault and horizontal bar and parallel bars team competitions) en 1896. He also won the Greco-Roman wrestling tournament in a major upset. Schumann also competed in three events in athletics (long jump, triple jump and shot put) and in weightlifting.

This is from the excellent website

Wow, straight out of Channel 9's 20 to 1 spiel.

Tbf though, it did. Everyone I know was talking about it in the lead up and there was a crazy amount of media build up. I remember in my house, literally every family member stopped what they were doing to watch it, that has never happened before and has never happened since especially as apart from myself and my brother we're not a sporting family at all. It might be cliche but that's what happened.

Am I right in thinking this hasn't been nominated yet?

Yeup Second this, One of the greatest moments in Olympic History and a very touching and inspiring story of not only the American athletes but also the Aussie who won the silver medal.

''I said to John, 'You got another one of those badges?' '' Norman said, referring to the human-rights badges Smith and Carlos planned to wear over their hearts. ''He said, 'If I get you one, will you wear it?' I said, 'I sure would.' ''

Wow..
