Tino Best's international career ends at 26

On an interesting note, our club coach said that domestic cricketers in India get paid a lot more than those in England and noted that they get paid a 'ridiculous amount'. Perhaps the Indian domestic players who join are really joining partially for greed rather than to support their families.
This is the type of argument that annoys me most, Given a chance all of us would like to make as much as we want in our jobs and but when it comes to cricketers we start calling them greedy bunch because they want some financial security for themselves and for their families.

Unlike most other professions, a cricketer's career is much shorter and I dont see how anyone can fault them for trying to make the most during that short period.

Besides there is a complete hypocrisy among cricket fans with regards to ICL, no one says a thing to those who have joined IPL but it has become a fashion to judge all the ICLers.

Though if you look at his salary in terms of purchasing power....
Yup, my uncle has a full time driver for Rs. 3000 (approx. 40 pounds) a month.....
I dont think that proves anything. My dad has a full time driver for 1000 Rs/month and he(the Driver) manages to survive and my brother makes 75000/month and even that is less for him. Even in US there are folks who make 6 USD/hour they survive too and then there are folks who make 200 USD/hour.

I travel to India and quite frequently and find that living in India now a days is as expensive as it is in USA.

Dictionary definition of psychopath: "A mentally unbalanced person who is inclined toward antisocial and criminal behavior."

Tell me...short of beamers (which are certainly not acceptable, but have arguably been bowled by many a quick accidentally or deliberately) - how has Tino Best been criminally irresponsible and antisocial? I mean...I do accept that he was an immature, poseurish idiot - but the difference between that and psychosis is stark.
Psychopath is clearly an exaggeration\catchphrase-use, but the point is this: it was rare for 3 or 4 innings to go by without a Beamer from Best. Even Brett Lee, who has bowled more than he should have in his career, has only had perhaps 4 or 5 in, what, nearly 300 international bowling spells it must be? (ODIs and both innings of a Test)

Best certainly hasn't been completely sans-antisocial behaviour, either. On the West Indies A tour over here in 2002, he, along with Suileman (I think that's how it's spelt) Benn, was sent for a stint on the counsellor's couch due to appalling behaviour with team-mates (that tour was one of the most filthy-tempered in recent memory).

Best has certainly looked a little unbalanced to me more than once.

Clearly I'm a bit more careful with vocabulary than you are. That's fine. :)

I'm curious - what exactly did Best do on that tour? Do you know?

Yes, I also agree that he's an immature idiot.

Or pedantic. That you out-pedant Rich is nothing short of incredible. :D
I'd like to aspire to be a little more than a 'Richard' clone, thanks. ;) That being said, I do think that he's a high-quality poster and the majority of his views on cricket are indeed valid. As for my pedantic tendencies, I do acknowledge them. But, to me, choosing your words carefully is usually wiser than giving rise to wild innuendo by using exaggerations, which can put you in trouble (I've done it before).

Oh, and me too, rest assured.

Aside from the Lloyd incident (which is probably the worst of his many Beamer escapades - Lloyd was getting after him, he hurled a head-high, blatantly deliberate, Beamer at the batsman, Lloyd threw his bat back at the bowler and it was probably only the quick intervention of Devon Smith and a few others that stopped a full-on on-pitch brawl) there was reportedly feuding aplenty, often open, with captain Daren Ganga. Manager Joel Garner and coach Gus Logie both condemned Best, Sulieman Benn and, of course, Runako Morton, who at that stage really did have psychopathic tendencies (he was soon to be involved in a stabbing incident). All three were fined, Morton was banned for a year, and were sent for a stint on the counsellor's couch.

Logie's summation was "at times there was a breakdown in respect for one another" which, for a mild man like he, is a damning rebuke.

Yeah, Runako Morton's character is highly questionable. Lying about his dead grandmother...seriously, WTF?

Yeah, the incident above sounds pretty bad and confirms my suspicion that he is (or was) a mentally underdeveloped individual (still not really a psychopath...hasn't actually done anything unlawful off the pitch as far as I know).

Yes. There are people in US who dont earn a penny and they still survive and they dont beg. Not that it proves anything in this context.

I just watched the Quarter Final of the Stanford T20 and Tino's first over summed him up perfectly. A no ball, a beamer and a ball at 148kph were among the highlights...

0.1 Best to Smith, 1 no ball, Oh Starts with a beamer out side the off! umpire signals it immediately
0.1 Best to Smith, no run
0.2 Best to Smith, no run, short and bounces, batsman looks to pull and gets off his shoulder.
0.3 Best to Smith, FOUR, bit of room out side the off, Smith quickly on to it and smacks it through the covers for four
0.4 Best to Smith, 1 run, good come back, straight and the ball keeping low, batsman defends to it on the back foot and sets off for a quick single
0.5 Best to Fletcher, no run, that was a beauty out side the off stump, bit of bounce and the batsman leaves it alone
0.6 Best to Fletcher, 1 wide, short pitched and bounces way over Fletchers head and well taken by the keeper
0.6 Best to Fletcher, FOUR, shot! given bit of room on the off again, this time Fletcher kneels down and drives it elegantly down through deep extra covers

The Rs 3000 pm is around the minimum wage or just a little higher (and could be lower depending on which state it is in). The Rs 1000 is most certainly below the minimum wage.

As to the living wage estimates (ie how much it costs to live): I recall seeing a fairly detailed breakdown for a family of 4 in a Bangalore slum to be about Rs 5200 per month. Other areas in India are of course cheaper (I would guess only Bombay and Delhi are more expensive than Bangalore) .

Ie in short - I dont see how the $25 per month is enough for survival in India.
