What a match from Punter, his quality and fearless strokeplay against fast bowling has always been his hallmark and I don't think he's ever shown it more brilliantly than in those two innings against a great attack. The Lillee-McGrath-Spofforth pace trio tore into the WI batting to give Australia a very handy first innings lead, which was turned into an absolutely unassailable one by the inevitably Bradman-led second innings onslaught.
I was hoping the Windies would turn it on in their second dig to give us a run chase to remember and send the match right down to the wire, but when Bob Simpson turns out better figures than anything SK Warne has managed all series (and in Barbados no less), you know it's probably not your Test match...
So the Aussies have clinched the series, but it's 4-4 overall, and there are still bragging rights to be played for with one match remaining.

Awesome stuff by the Aussies - Ponting had a huge match, Simpson was a solid in with the bat in the first innings and a more than useful spin option in the second. Bradman made up for a first innings failure in spades in the second innings. The Windies were very very disappointing with the bat it must be said.
In addition to the headline quote, McGrath was quoted tonight as saying that he feels the Aussies now have a definite mental edge over the Windies batsman. Ponting also questioned the captaincy and intent the Windies displayed during Australia's innings "honestly, the series was on the line there, and they definitely went away for a couple of sessions, and seemed to resort to just bowling short stuff without having any plan to take the wickets they needed - I thought they definitely lost the plot a bit there."

Jeez, everyone apart from Hunte is due for a big one!
Even Lara and Sobers, iirc, have only contributed a few 50's between them.
But I agree, enough of chopping and changing the side.
So the same side for the 5th test, but...perhaps we should swap Weekes and Viv?

Lillee must have got an insane amount of wickets this series.
Edit: 34. Which would have been a new series record in the West Indies (t' old: Colin Croft v Pakistan 76/77). Somewhat better than his career stats of 32 overs, five maidens, nought for 132.

Well the series got the final it deserved - magnificent performances with the bat from both Bradman and Lara, while Garner and Ambrose were both superb with the ball. After Australia's second innings the Windies were expected to romp home but an inspired performance in the field from Australia, combined with DK Lillee firing up as he did all series, meant that it went right down to the wire and there were more than a few nervous moments for the Calypso Kings before they snuck in.
Can anyone post the final series averages? That must have been 4 or 5 tons for The Don, and Lara and Sobers must have impressive run tallies as well. Lillee's 34 wickets was an outstanding achievement against such a line up, a credit to both his ability and his stamina.
Finally a big thanks to the tour manager adharcic, who organised the accommodation, playing venues, player's needs/requirements/egos and after match entertainment and ensured it all went like clockwork. Though reports that Keith Miller has spent most of his off-field time with the reigning Miss Jamaica are apparently way off the mark.

The India Pakistan series would be mad - but I'm not going to be running it anytime soon. I've got an insane amount of work on over the next couple of weeks - I'll be lucky if I'm on at all for the next little while
I'll sim and post the scorecards for the final of the England-SA series tonight, but a match review will have to be produced by someone else (I'd nominate The Sean if he's keen).
