Whereas DV was a good middle order bat with economical left arm swing.
Whereas DV was selected as a specialist (and very crafty) spin bowler, who could occasionally hold an end up in one day games with the bat. Averaged 17 with the bat in ODIs remember. Wasn't ever a one-day all-rounder.

Batting at 22.04 for the last 11 years of his career and batting as high as #5 in the order.

If an average of 21 called Hadlee an allrounder...

But I consider the #8 spot in a batting line up, especially in ODI cricket, as a bowling all rounder's spot (unless its the wicket keeper) or its the 1980's West Indies team as it is the lower middle order before the typical tail of 9 10 jack. Not to say you cannot have an allrounder at 9 in ODI cricket.

Vettori made many crunch runs in ODI cricket. I think his batting was underestimated by many. 6 test hundreds aint a lemon and some skill was transferred to his ODI batting.

If a 22 batting average in ODIs makes you a recognised batsman, god knows how great that must make Hamish Marshall and his 27 ODI batting average.

Vettori: exceptional bowler, could hold a bat, occasionally filled a gap up the order because NZ is ****

Santner: exceptional OD batsman, can bowl a bit as a filler bowler, is a very good 5th/6th bowler and will occasionally be used for a full ten when a bowler's down

22 can make you a bowling allrounder in the middle order before the tail. I typically assess the tail at 9 (unless say for example its the 1980s West Indies). You may start it at 8.

I take it then that you expect that Santner will drastically improve his List A batting average? Its currently at a mind boggling 26. Whereas his bowling is 31 and ER of 4.8.

If Santner is not a bowling allrounder, where do you see Santner's role in the current ODI team? Replacing Grant Elliot? And Anderson and four other bowlers still required?

The way I see Santner is like our Moeen. He's more of a batsman at the moment, but there's no doubt he's gonna be encouraged to focus on his bowling.

I like the look of Tastle.

Is there some really obvious reason he's still being overlooked?
Back in 2013 Hesson said an advantage he saw to Sodhi was that he wasn't a traditional slow or loopy legspinner. He was big on finding someone who could offer good revs, bounce and a flat trajectory. So yeah, I don't know if you'll see Tastle again under Hesson.

Sodhi to become our Kumble, Santner our Smith (hopefully).

You'll next see NZA in action at Hagley Oval and Lincoln, sadly. Sri Lanka A here for five ODs and two four-dayers in October.

Astle, IMO based on admittedly not exhaustive footage in the vault, looks by far the most improved player in NZ cricket. By a long way. Maybe Duffy getting back to his 17 year old peak matches it.

He even gets to bowl in the white ball stuff for Canterbury now (good economy but low on wickets). Whether this white-ball selection is due to his improvements or if the Canty coach and captain getting balls bigger than pea sized (they also used to be too scared to select Bennett for T20s etc), I'm not sure.

Yeah in my viewing those freebie full tosses that Sri Lanka and Ryder were seen feasting on back in 2012 have become far less frequent.

There weren't a huge number of times Tastle beat the edge sending them down at close to 90kph in his TV games, but he's proven he does have it in him to create a chance with some bounce.

He still has to dial it back down to 80kph to get that big drift and spin that featured in his one Test wicket.

tbf has there ever been a leggie who could get it to rip at 90kph? Warne and MacGill always hovered around the lates 70s-early 80s.

Therein lies the quixotic allure of Ish Sodhi, Albi. If he can get his diamonds/rocks ratio a bit higher every year.

Great video. What appeals to me the most is his reaction afterwards. He was like yeah I beat the bat, no big deal. That is progress unto itself.

dictionary.com has observed a marked increase in traffic since you started posting on forums no doubt
What's worse is that you stumbled upon one of the little pun landmines I sometimes leave in a post.

Don Quixote....Don Quick Sodhi.....a tickling little extra for the Kippax decryption experts.
