When I ran the original mystery box draft I randomised completely and people generally knew there was only one player that fit, or that it was a guaranteed duff option.

Yeah. I try to select years with multiple players. Before the people give their options, I have already decided which player is to be assigned for a given option, It's pretty opaque I realize, but I didn't think there was a better way to do it.
