New Zealand Off Season 2014

Canterbury are such a weird team. A third of the side that played most of the campaign wouldn't be out of place on the test roster (Latham, Brownlie, Bennett and Henry), a third would be fortunate to make any other PS side and then you have the two nearly but not quites who are specialist lower order heroes in disguise but still take ridiculous quantities of wickets.

Not in Div 1, IMO. If he were running around Div 2 then the overall quality would, IMO, be below the Plunket. But he's doing it against the top English sides.
Yeah I think that's probably rubbish ftr. Let's imagine the Wuzids played five four-dayers against Essex in the UK. They'd absolutely come home from those with three losses, minimum. Here's Mark Footitt, coming in to bowl to some hit-through-the-line agribusinessman now -
.
The quality of the players is not markedly different. Over the past 10 years, guys like Sinclair, Papps, Flynn, Gillespie, Hopkins etc would have done well in any first class competition.

The difference is that the remuneration is significantly better. Which allows them to sort out the rest of their lives much more easily so that they can actually concentrate on cricket.

I reckon there's undoubtedly a gulf between the likes of Yorkshire and Warwickshire compared to Leicestershire, for example, but you're probably right in there not being a huge gap between the middle of Div 1 and the middle of Div 2, yeah.
:detective:

The top teams are the ones with Kiwis you say?

5 ODIs is overkill but nice to see a 3 test series.

I suspect we'll be destroyed by Ajmal but we'll see.

If the pitches are dry and take turn, then we'll be beaten easily. But if the pitches have some life in them, as they did during the PAK v SRL series in December/January, then we'll have a chance. Misbah and Younis aside, Pakistan's batting is inconsistent (they got rolled by Tahir ffs). In particular, I think Dubai can normally be relied upon to give the seamers a chance.

- Is the standard of cricket just lower in the CC than the PS?
Late to the party on this, but definitely no. Just looking at this latest match, Patel was bowling at Chris Rodgers and Sam Robson (who apparently is a good chance to make his debut for England next month) - and by all accounts was still causing serious difficulties for both of them. I would put Jeets' success at Warks down to a combination of greater turn available from the pitches and batsman with poor techniques against spin, good close-in catchers, and the confidence of the skipper in setting attacking fields.

We do have a WC coming up which is the primary performance target of NZC. tbh im surprised it was not a 2Test 7 ODI series. It was not that long ago when NZ effectively stopped playing test cricket for 10 months to prepare for World Cups

You have to be concerned about how well NZC pays when one of our best bowlers has to moonlight as a teenager on Shortland Street.

Cricket: Black Caps to face Pakistan in UAE - Sport - NZ Herald News

It's good to see that a full 3-test series against Pakistan has been confirmed. I had had a suspicion that the test series would be cut down to 2 games, so I'm glad that my fears were unfounded.
That is fantastic. And a little unexpected - I wouldn't have dared to hope for a three test series there as we may well be uncompetitive. But every match in turning conditions will hopefully help our batsmen improve, and as you say if there's anything for our seamers in any of the pitches then we have a chance to expose Pakistan's batting.

Auckland Cricket remain opposed to plans to fast-track a revamp of the domestic game, believing measured discussions would be more beneficial rather than rushing into change, such as privatisation.

Last month a New Zealand Cricket-generated report recommended a drastic overhaul, including the option to sell up to 49 per cent of franchises to private investors. Feedback on the proposed changes needs to be submitted by Thursday.

A number of major associations and stakeholders like the New Zealand Cricket Players Association have welcomed the prospect for change, including the privatisation proposal. Auckland, however, are a lot more cautious.

"We welcome the debate and agree domestic cricket needs a review," Auckland Cricket chief executive Mark Cameron said. "Clearly the product and brand are not achieving their goals but no one in the business world would set up a company, get investors in and only then decide what product they're going to sell.

"Which of our domestic competitions are development tools for the Black Caps and which are stand-alone commercial activities? When do we want to schedule them? What's the look and feel for the television and live audience? Do we want them under lights? What is each team worth?

"We haven't answered those critical questions. That'll probably take a year or two. Only after we've positioned our product should we be taking it to investors rather than the other way around."

Cameron said one concern lies with the potential for a fractured investment situation where only half the teams get private investment. The consequence might alter the balance of the competition leaving cricket with a model similar to football's ASB Premiership, where only Auckland City or Waitakere United have won since its inception in 2004. Another alternative is the National Basketball League where teams float in and out depending on whether they can find a financial backer.

"We're looking for a miracle answer from a third party," Cameron said. "I don't believe that's going to happen until we get our positioning right. Name me a purely domestic sport which succeeds financially? There aren't many. We need an international flavour added, like Super Rugby. Australia's Big Bash is not looking to sell off franchises and neither is The Blast in English cricket. They're still asking, 'why give benefits to a third party?'

"Also, what's the first thing a private investor's going to do? They'll poach that player from CD and this player from Otago. Before you know it, an Auckland City-Waitakere United situation develops."

Auckland are stronger financially than most major associations due to the insurance provided by the Eden Park Trust Act. The act guarantees them, and fellow beneficiary Auckland Rugby, revenue from events at the venue. Not all associations are as fortunate.

Auckland would like to see the Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy remain as development tools and still see the drive for commercial revenue coming from the T20 competition.

"We don't want to divest ourselves of the responsibility like the West Indies did with the ill-fated Allen Stanford league," Cameron said. "Cricket should be owned by cricket people."

Cameron makes a couple of very good points in this article
Particularly around defining what is being sold and comparing it to other semi-professional leagues.

Yes, Mark Cameron, thankyou.

You can't just say "this needs an overhaul" and then follow it up with "selling it will make it better". That doesn't make sense. They need to actually think of ways to make the competition better both in terms of profitability and development. If that involves a third party, great, but just simply getting a third party involved isn't a magic pill.
