Players who are exceptional in one format and dire in another

As TC mentioned in the original discussion, Ajantha Mendis is the one who instantly cropped to mind. Still gets trotted out to do a decent job in ODI every now and again, but beyond his first series has really struggled to make a test impact at all.

Twose was my favourite player for a long time.

Exceptional fielder also.
IMHO Twose would have had more test success if he'd been able to have a regular #5 / #6 slot. He suffered from the NZ test middle logjam, Fleming - Astle - McMillan - Cairns, so was forced to open in half of his test matches.

Astle opened in ODIs so Twose could do his middle over nurdling / late over hitting stuff. Similar to Scott Styris, Twose seemed to be able to build excellent ODI innings despite not having the natural skill of a Fleming / Astle etc. Was very good at finding gaps. Almost an anti-Sinclair.

Saw him captain a few domestic 50 over games for Wgtn, very astute (often had Gavin Larsen to help as the senior pro), always wondered if he'd been considered for a NZ split captaincy sometime in 96-97 when Fleming seemed to be struggling in ODIs. But then he lost his place in the ODI side for a year, before returning for world class 98-2001 ODI seasons.

You could arguably include Lance Klusener in this. Averaged 41 with the bat and under 30 with the ball in ODIs, but 'only' 33 with the bat and 37 with the ball in tests.

33 in tests isn't terrible but neither is it anything special, and a 37 bowling average doesn't really add much either.

VVS Laxman is a shout too - 45 average in tests but just scrapes an average of 30 in ODIs with a SR of 71.

I consider Lax as an Australia specialist in ODIs. He averages 46 against them at a SR of 77. Even scored 4 of his 6 hundreds against them.

Came here to post this! And what makes Laxman's record in ODIs even weird is that he averaged over 46 against the best side of his time, Australia!

Younis Khan is a Laxmanesque shout, so is Jayawardene (despite a few glorious knocks)

Erm, Strauss? And I think you've got Ajay Jadeja the wrong way around...

Also Lara and Ganguly were both good ODI players. Perhaps they were a bit better in tests, but they certainly weren't 'not good in ODIs.'
