That's placing Dhoni's batting incredibly high to rate his fielding good enough for an ODI ATG side. DeVilliers is an amazing fielder. I'm not sure Dhoni's batting is worth that. I think I'd just keep Gilchrist and DeV

It's a hard pick. If I'm going with Dhoni he'll have the gloves and then you have to question whether Gilchrist is a better option than Jayasuriya at the top of the order (playing a similar batting role but adding his great fielding plus canny bowling) or whether you look at a specialist like Amla, Greenidge etc. At the moment I'm on Shane Watson, he was an unreal LO opener and his bowling adds another dimension.

Will be interesting how long it takes a fit Mitchell Starc to start slipping into these teams.

01. Sachin Tendulkar (must)
02. Adam Gilchrist
03. Brian Lara
04. Viv Richards (must)
05. AB De Villiers
06. Michael Bevan
07. Kapil Dev (must)
08. Shaun Pollock
09. Wasim Akram (must)
10. Shane Warne
11. Glenn McGrath

Positions 1-7 aren't very difficult to come up with as it's all good which ever way you go. Gilchrist or Dhoni, does it really matter? Picking Gilchrist allows for Bevan, one of greatest chasers of all time, and picking Dhoni allows for someone like Jayasuriyah or Waugh in the opening spot. So there is no loss in strength no matter what combination you choose.

However, finding the right balance for the tail is tough. I would like to have Akram (a must) at No.8 but he's not quite good enough with the bat IMO, and in effect the tail becomes too weak. Shaun Pollock is a natural in that spot but that means I can't pick both McGrath and Garner. Something I'd really like to do.

The team I have ended up choosing bats down to No.10 (more or less). Something desirable for ODI competitions.

Amla and Hussey surely got to be highly considered for a ODI all time XI,

Top 6:

1 Tendulkar
2 Amla
3 Viv
4 ABD
5 Hussey
6 Dhoni

The rest is really tough to pick but probably I'd go:

7 Kapil
8 Wasim
9 Garner
10 Murali
11 McGrath

But that's a pretty weak tail with garner starting at 9. Hadlee, pollock, Warne, Kohli and Gilchrist are stong considerations.

7-11 could easily be (and a variety of other combo's):

7 Pollock
8 Hadlee
9 Wasim
10 Warne
11 McGrath/Garner
