Would Praveen Kumar make the England XI?

hang on

State Vice-Captain
The strongest XI, that is.

While we are at it, would you, as selector, choose Khan in your strongest England XI. Khan as he has been over the past couple of years i.e. ostensibly fit or fit in a cat kind of way. Schrodinger's cat that is, not the one of Stevens fame.

Praveen: No, because though he's done well, he's not Timbo.

Zaheer: Yes, because he's way worth it when he is fit, I think he would be handled a touch better by the England setup, and we have bowlers to cover for him if he breaks down during a tour.

ahead of chaps like bresnan, and miles ahead of broady... so there is a case for him to get selected in their best xi.

anderson and tremlett sure shot, swann also, so maybe him as 4th bowler. if khan is also there, khan will get the nod ahead.

Quite possibly. Not quite the kind of bowler they need though, with Anderson (and Onions) lying around.

Think Ryan Sidebottom is a fairly good marker for where he'd stand in the county system, (yeah SiBo has 5mph or so on him, but relatively speaking he occupies the same place) so it'd have to be the right coach to feel as though he was worth the punt.

Which in brings us back to Duncan Fletcher's nigh-unbelievable change of heart.

He definitely doesn't add versatility or a new dimension to the attack so that goes against him. Anderson and Onions can do what he does. Zaheer would definitely be in since England have enough depth to cover injuries.

Anderson and Onions are different bowlers to him, but still don't think he will make it to the england side in all conditions. Whether he should in England is a different matter.

If he was English he'd be ignored totally unless there was an injury crisis ahead of a test at Headingley or Trent Bridge.

I'm a big Praveen fan, but you'd think Bresnan would get the nod ahead of him. The English selectors are bullish over Broad as well, so he'd seem to be on the outer next to Onions.

Never in a million years.

Seriously, talk about over reaction. He went well in the first innings, yes, but let's not forget Ajit Agarkar bowled Australia to defeat once too.

A generation previously he might have been a "horse for courses" pick at Headingley or Trent Bridge like Mallinder or Watkin were, but since the advent of central contracts we don't really do that anymore.

Whats the difference between him and Sidebottom?
About 10mph & 5 inches. Sidebottom's taller too.

Nah, seriously, Sidebottom was regularly up around 84-87mph when he came back. It did horrible things to his back, but he'd gained a yard from his first abortive spell in tests.

Also, had Bresnan, Finn & Onions been on the radar back then Sid might never have got his go at all.

let's not forget that, in agarkar's case, it was a one-off after a long string of failures. in kumar's case, he has done well in the few opportunities he has been given. since u bring up central contracts, perhaps the more pertinent question is: would he be good enough for a central contract?
