Brad Hodge Discussion Thread

With him being in the news a little bit recently, and it's not going to stop with him being prepared to speak his mind freely to the media, thought it was worth creating a thread to keep all the discussion in.

Makes out he made truckloads of Shield runs every summer. It just wasn't the case; at least not in the order of a Hayden for example. That said, he was desperately unlucky not to go to SA in 2006 considering his 2005/2006 results.
To back you up, according to this page he never had a thousand run season.

Should've been watching Gilly's wonder-hundred from the dressing room (or the non-strikers), but such is life. Will make no comment on him personally now, regardless of whether I've slipped before, but he comes off as a **** to the media.

Decided to go through his Sheffield Shield seasons, one by one, and highlight anything that you'd consider "good".

1993/94: 903 runs @ 50
1994/95: 343 runs @ 22
1995/96: 174 runs @ 22
1996/97: 237 runs @ 20
1997/98: 494 runs @ 38
1998/99: 652 runs @ 43
1999/00: 423 runs @ 25
2000/01: 973 runs @ 54
2001/02: 858 runs @ 57

2002/03: 503 runs @ 33
2003/04: 984 runs @ 62
2004/05: 891 runs @ 64

2005/06: 433 runs @ 33
2006/07: 765 runs @ 85
2007/08: 762 runs @ 48
2008/09: 803 runs @ 62
2009/10: 276 runs @ 69

So when you look at it, from 2003/04 onwards, he was pretty damn awesome, aside from 2005/06, which was the same season that he played for Australia against South Africa. The fact that, from memory, after the Sydney Test vs SA, he didn't score any runs for Victoria quite probably contributed to him getting dropped for the away series in South Africa.

Clearly, the thing that's cost him is how ordinarily he performed after his first season. It meant that the start of his big run was wasted because, instead of pushing himself up for selection, he was having to prove himself as being good enough in the first place to be a regular shield player.

Clearly his best work was in the shorter form, not that his FC stats are bad at all. But his test form was always good, last test got a 50 in the WI and batted so well, completely at ease. Ridiculous that a guy like North was even close to selection when he never had any seasons as good as Hodge. Dave Hussey is the most unlucky one, his stats are way better than Hodge over the last 6 or 7 years.

You mean the match in Perth after Martyn retired? Didn't Symonds bowl well in that game and get a big hundred in the next one?

He's a whinger, has a terrible voice and is Victorian.

However, the man can bat.

Not whinging when someone denies you a career IMO.

I think Hodge is a dumb **** btw, and I will forever be a Dussey man, but he can complain about selectors all he likes. Especially when its valid and useful criticism (i.e. that they told him **** all in meetings, which meant he had no idea what to do).
