I’ll put up the player lists for the completed Bangladesh v India series in a minute, but first here are the average ratings for the previously completed series.

First, South Africa v England

South Africa

HM Amla _ 6.4
MV Boucher _ 8.1
AB de Villiers _ 5.7
F de Wet _ 5.4
JP Duminy _ 4
PL Harris _ 4.9
JH Kallis _ 8
R McLaren _ 4.9
M Morkel _ 8.1
M Ntini _ 2.6
WD Parnell _ 5.1
AG Prince _ 3.1
GC Smith _ 8.4
DW Steyn _ 7.7

England

JM Anderson _ 6
IR Bell _ 7.1
SCJ Broad _ 5.6
PD Collingwood _ 7.9
AN Cook _ 6.9
G Onions _ 5.6
KP Pietersen _ 4
MJ Prior _ 4.9
RJ Sidebottom _ 3.9
AJ Strauss _ 4.7
GP Swann _ 8
IJL Trott _ 4.4

So, Graeme Smith is Man of the Series, with Collingwood topping the England player ratings.
Ntini ends up as the lowest rated player from either side, a sad way for him to finish his test career.

Next, Australia v Pakistan

Australia

DE Bollinger - 7.8
MJ Clarke - 6.3
BJ Haddin - 6.2
NM Hauritz - 8.2
PJ Hughes - 3.5
MEK Hussey - 7.7
MG Johnson - 7.5
SM Katich - 7.3
MJ North - 2.5
RT Ponting - 6.5
PM Siddle - 6.3
SR Watson - 9

Pakistan

Abdur Rauf - 0.9
Danish Kaneria - 5.2
Faisal Iqbal - 3.5
Imran Farhat - 4
Kamran Akmal - 2.2
Khurram Manzoor - 5.5
Misbah-ul-Haq - 3.7
Mohammad Aamer - 5.8
Mohammad Asif - 7.8
Mohammad Sami - 5.3
Mohammad Yousuf - 4
Saeed Ajmal - 2.7
Salman Butt - 6.8
Sarfraz Ahmed - 4
Shoaib Malik - 4.8
Umar Akmal - 5.7
Umar Gul - 4.7

Watson Man of the Series; Mohammad Asif tops the Pakistan ratings.

Abdur Rauf gets a truly woeful average rating of 0.9, thanks to receiving one rating of zero. Even discounting that, as the ratings are usually done as a scale of 1 to 10, his average rating would be 1.1; hard to do worse than that...

Not a bad idea this, but can really only mark series I've watched. Didn't get to see Eng vs. SA or Ind vs. Bang in these parts.

Bit harsh on Dougeh and Hauritz there. Both bowlers did far better than could have been expected of them going into the series. Also, what did Johnson do to earn a 5? Seriously underrating a number of key performers here.

Nah. Disagree. Maybe a bit harsh on Bollinger. Hauritz bowled adequately, but nothing special. Johnson didn't contribute enough when needed. The best bowlers on show were Watson and Asif, followed by Siddle and Gul. Hauritz massively outperformed Kaneria, but that wasn't hard.

Disagree so much with this. I think Hauritz's stats make him look a better bowler than he is/was. But rating Siddle so highly is beyond my realm of thought. While **** bowlers can get wickets, the main aspect of cricket is results and Johnson and Bollinger got them....and have done so through the majority of their short careers.

Siddle outbowled them in Hobart in a ridiculously one sided dead rubber but apart from that was a long way behind those two. He did have one or two 'unlucky' spells. But wickets are wickets you don't read unlucky on the scorecard.

Siddle's crucial batting at Sydney also gained him a couple of points. You guys would have lost that game without him. (Plus, I rate Siddle so was clearly being biased - stop pulling me up on it, alright? ;) )

Whoops! sorry

Thanks, I hope it will catch on. I'd like to keep doing this -- I'm hoping that it will provide some kind of quasi-objective rating of how important various players are to their respective teams, or how dominant players have been in specific series. Of course the results per series are interesting of themselves, but maybe calibrating them across a year of test cricket will also be interesting.

Obviously each series will only be rated by people who watched enough of it to have an opinion, but as the basic pool of people providing ratings will remain the same I think it will be a valid sample.

silentstriker suggested doing it on a match-by-match basis, which would probably be ideal, but I want to see if the idea catches on before doing that. I'm also a bit worried about how time- and energy- consuming a match-by-match rating would be.

I already posted "results" for the first two series thinking no one else would reply, but I will continue to add new ratings for those series into my spreadsheet; I don't know how often to post the current results. I think I'll probably have to impose a deadline at some point -- maybe a month after the series ended. What do you think?

Sounds good.

FWIW I think this is a great idea. It's a lot of effort to keep it going though, and enthusiasm for this kind of thing doesn't generally last. Still definitely worth a try.
