    Neil Broom

Broom has an average of around 16, hes played 16 ODI's for New Zealand, 201 runs, High score of 31.

You think he should still be apart of the side?

Hes been a regular for the Blackcaps, why is he still there?

For the ODI & T20 sides, batting at 6/7? In short, no.

However I think he'd be a good addition to the Test team, batting at 3 or 5.

If he was to be persisted with in the ODI side it should definitely be in the top order. He's not a late order slogger, or someone who finds the gaps with ease (Bevan style). Needs time to construct an innings but IMO not really suited to the shorter format.

Annoyingly, his Test chances have most likely been tarnished by his poor limited overs career so far. Am a big fan.

He would have been dropped earlier if injuries hadn't occurred I suspect.

He's really in the wrong format. Has no List A centuries and an average of 30 domestically, which when compared with his FC record where he averages 37-38 I do wonder why he's been pigeon holed as an ODI specialist hitter.

Probably wouldn't have gotten into the side for injuries anyway. While he's been pretty good in the A and Top End limited over games, he's never been up to much in that format domestically.

Was surprised at his call-up initially, from memory he debuted in the same match as Guptill when the side were badly hit by injuries, and hit a powerful cameo at the end of the innings. I suspect hes a bit lucky to have retained his place for so long, though tend to agree that hes been limited in opportunities to bat in a higher position and really produce an innings of substance.

I'm still not convinced that he belongs in the side yet, but i'd like to see him play in the test side that's playing Pakistan tomorrow, it would great to see how he plays when hes actually got time to bat.

The Aussie's rated him higher then Ryder and Guptill in the 2008 emerging players tournament. Irrc they couldn't believe he hadn't played for New Zealand yet, so he must have some quite good potential.

If I was a selector he'd be batting at three in both forms of the game for New Zealand.

Glad as hell you're not a NZ selector then.

I'm sorry to all Broom fans out there, but Broom = zero imo & shouldn't be picked for a good few years until his obvious deficiencies are sorted out.

People can claim he's batting out of position all they like, but what concerns me is virtually every-time I've watched him, he completely misses straight balls & is either out LBW or bowled.

And then people tirelessly labour the point that his FC record is okay...big deal I say...

There's been plenty of players over the years that have feared reasonably well at FC level, but have struggled with the step up to internationals, and he's is a classic example of this from what I've seen.

Not exclusively due to the fact he averages 13 (or whatever it is) either, but more due to the fact he's looked all at sea every time I've seen him to the point where I've just become resigned to the fact he'll miss a straight ball & fail.

I'm really lost as to what I'm missing here exactly.

    Broom Good points

Scored a good 50 in a warm up game against India (one of the top teams in the world)

Looked good until he ran himself out in the final of the CT.

The ability to go over the top if he decides to (has shown glimpses of this)

    Broom Bad points

Looks at sea against top class spin bowling (but then many of new zealands batsman could fall into this camp)

Seems to lack good decision making skills while batting in ODIs. Like getting a short ball and trying to beat the guy at short midwicket (and getting caught by him) instead of going down the ground for a single. Even if the shot comes off it is just two runs vs a single.

An average pull shot. Dismissed to this shot a few times. Doesn't get through the shot with the ball hurrying on to him.

Conclusion: If he is happy to keep batting a 7 I don't mind giving him a few more tries there. But I am not expecting much. Will not feel sorry for him if he is sent back to Otago for the next few years.

In addition to my prior comments, please answer the following question.........

Name any another International team (Bangladesh included) that would continue to select a specialist batsman for their ODI side who after 16 innings averaged 15 with the bat & had strike-rate in the mid 60s?

Yeah, i'll have to agree with Zinzan, I can't really see the selectors rational.

BUT as I said, I would like to see him in the longer form of the game, his FC record is okay.

But does FC statistics matter when you've got an average of 16 from 16 innings at an international level?

Does a 50 matter in a warm up game?

    No.

We also did it with Craig Cumming and Daniel Flynn.

Sums it up for me right there....that being one has to make reference to a performance in a meaningless warm-up game (when a bowling team generally experiments & tries different things) to make a point in his favour.

I do think Broom should go back to domestic cricket for a while, but I just have to mention that McCullum's record was something like that for his first couple of years too.

The question was of any OTHER International team.

Anyways, on Flynn & Cumming, at least they were both were dropped eventually.
