When you replace MoYo with ponting and Hayden with Jayasuriya, it's almost perfect. Jayasuriya >> Hayden as a player any day.
I seriously considered Ponting, but he doesn't bat at #4, which is why I couldn't include him over Mohammad Yousuf. If he did, then I could. Kallis is more technically sound than Ponting and has a better average there, so that's why I put him in at #3 instead of Ponting. I think that Ponting is safely superior in Tests to Kallis, but not ODI's. Plus, Kallis can bowl. At any rate, Mohammad Yousuf is a very fine ODI player.

As for Jayasuriya, he was very unlucky to miss out. I know that he's a ODI pioneer, but I still think that Hayden>>Jayasuriya as an ODI batsman (and a Test batsman). Both are pretty good fielders. Jayasuriya can bowl, but Bond and McGrath have the death bowling role sewn up. That just leaves Jayasuriya as a sixth bowler. Symonds can fill that role and has outperformed Jayasuriya as an ODI batsman. This means that I had trouble fitting Jayasuriya in.

Virender Sehwag
Chris Gayle
Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Andrew Flintoff (circa 2005, without him I probably would not love cricket as much as I do)
Adam Gilchrist+
Shaun Pollock
Shane Warne*
Shaoib Akhtar
Glenn McGrath

Perhaps not statistically the strongest side I could have named, but certainly the player's who have excited me the most since I started watching cricket.

Thats 12. One could drop one of the last three depending upon the wicket.

Once again few glaring ommisions. Murali > Warne in ODIs, and Jaysuriya can find some space in that batting lineup pushing Tendulkar to #4. There are much better ODI all rounders than Flintoff. I would drop him for Jayasuriya. Ambrose can vey well replae Lee. So a side of, Gilly, Jaya, Ponting, SRT, Bevan, Symonds, Pollock, Wasim, Ambrose, Murali, Mcgrath will be a top one.

Hayden has a good Avg (43.8), but his SR is pretty poor by recent standards. (79, which is just above average for the era). On other hand Jayasuriya as an opener averages 34.9 with SR of 92, would be the best partner Tendulkar get. And I would think Gilchrist > Hayden as an opener as well.

Jayasuriya is the kind of batsman who'll either leave the opposing side disorientated, or he'll get their tails up when he's dismissed early. Gilchrist is the same.

That doesn't really float my boat, so that's part of the reason why I selected Hayden, despite ruminating over Jayasuriya for such a long time. Of course, Hayden was one of my favourite players, so that may've been an influence. ;)

As for Gilchrist, where would I put him in the field? Keepers are not much chop in the slips (due to the varying angle) and the 'two keepers in one team' idea doesn't really work - as shown by Australia not winning a match with both of them when they played last year.

"Glaring" is a matter of opinion, just as your views on what players are better than others is also simply an opinion. What I put there is my opinion, and I did consider those players in reaching my decisions, so I'll keep my side as I had it, thanks.

Given I can have Sachin and Gilly in the team, I'll take Flintoff thanks. He's an exceptional ODI allrounder.

It does not come down to the opinions only. Stats also firmly back the claims that Murali > Warne in ODIs

That's you opinion. But I can name 5 better ODI all rounders (with proven records) than Flintoff.

Stats don't account for Warne's brilliance in tactics, and his rare ability to pull off miracles.

I'd take Murali but you can still say Warne could be chosen over him in ODIs, perhaps not in straight bowling but you get more than just bowling in the Warnie package.

Of the blokes I’ve actually seen live at the ground:

Matthew Hayden
Virenda Sehwag
Vivian Richards
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Greg Chappell
Adam Gilchrist
Wasim Akram
Shane Warne
Waqar Younis
Glenn McGrath

Only four specialist bowlers and so I probably should have given the no.6 slot to Kallis, but I just couldn’t resist that middle order. Waqar just edged out Holding for the final fast bowling slot.

The match where I saw both Richards and Holding was on the tour of Australia that Gordon Greenidge didn’t go on so I never actually ever saw him play – otherwise he’d be one of my openers.

this is as good a team as you would get. and these four specialists can take 20 wickets most of the time. good one.

Test:

Virender Sehwag
Matthew Hayden
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Waugh
Jacques Kallis
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Curtly Ambrose
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath

ODI (from the top of my mind):

Sanath Jayasuriya
Sachin Tendulkar
Vivian Richards
Javed Miandad
Brian Lara
Michael Bevan

Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath
On a second thought, I would like to have slight modifications in the sides:

Ricky Ponting (if he doesn't want to open, he can swap positions with Kallis)
Brian Lara
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Waugh
Jacques Kallis
Adam Gilchrist
Shane Warne
Curtly Ambrose
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath

ODI (Kapil in, Jayasuriya out):

Adam Gilchrist
Sachin Tendulkar
Vivian Richards
Javed Miandad
Brian Lara
Michael Bevan
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Curtly Ambrose
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath
