Modern Equivalents

Manee

Cricketer Of The Year
Hi,

Very interesting thread that could be met with a rather philosophical view that all people and therefore all cricket players are unique or the much more useful reply giving the modern day equivalents of players of the past. Heck, the equivalents don't even have to be from the present day. Will be very interested in the bowlers especially...

I'd rather if such weak comparisons as "**** Kenyan all rounder" to be ignored and have more complex comparisons, though they need not all be stylistic as below.

I'll get you started with a weak stylistic comparison (weak due to proximity in dates and the fact that one's style is based upon the other) of Munaf Patel and Glenn Mcgrath.

Both Aussie-killers
Both pacemen
Both ended up being "What ifs" due to injuries.

Not really, Shane Bond ended up due to ICL and NZ cricket board's idiocy and also has a very poor record against Australia.

Check his ODI records. He didnt play enough number of tests.

Also, Bond could never expect to be the same force post 32, and there is nothing to suggest that his body could match upto the demands of International cricket at this age.

Yeah that and tons of injuries. 17 Tests in 6 years tells you a fair bit. He only played his first two Tests against Aus so a very unfair to say he's poor against them, especially since he pretty much dominated the same side every time he played against them in ODI's, 3 of his 4 5-fers coming against them. Only missed playing against them again in Tests due to, surprise surprise, injury.

Ofcourse, but that doesn't make him an Aussie Killer either.

Hopefully Trescothick won't meet the same sad fate as Gimblett though that is a good comparison. Gimblett was such a hero, you couldn't make up the story about his debut.
