Certainly. What'd be interesting to know, though, is when he came over from West Indies - and, indeed, when he took-up the game ITFP. If both were recent-ish, I suppose him having no hype would be explicable.

Those who've been playing all their life in Britain, though... well, Sam Northeast had the huge raps at 15, may even have been younger.

Certainly. Yorkshire didnt change their 'only Yorkshire born players' selection policy to allow Overseas players in (though that was a secondary advantage).

What was the final push that ultimately caused the change was the fear of losing the high profile and Yorkshire raised but Manchester born Michael Vaughan.

Young, highly talented English players certainly have public exposure.

Having never seen the guy play or know nothing about him this may be a little harsh.

However, that cricinfo write up sounds like it is over egging the pudding.

The guy is already 19 and a bit. If he really was a quality top order batsman and can also bowl close to 90mph dont you think he would have got a chance by now or at least a bit more pub than he has?
For sure, never heard of him TBH (and his not a regularly in the seconds) but as you say if he had any resonates of talent and considering how appalling Surrey's pace attack is (minus Matthew Nicholson) then he would surely get a game or two.

Must ask next time I’m down The Oval about the kid. Could be another Jade Dernbach, who was hyped up considerably around The Oval.

And the thing that alarms me about it - and you haven't even listed the Kolpaks here, though that might have been done in completeness earlier, can't remember and CBA to look down - lazy I know - is that only a tiny number of those I would say are players who genuinely raise the standard. Mason, Price, Spearman, Pothas, Law (though he was once an overseas-player, as with the Flowers) and Trott. Though Dexter and Kieswetter look like they might do in the near future.

The rest, IMO, qualify as "needless waste of money".
bit harsh on Paul Horton to call him a "needless waste of money" to be honest, the guy has been on Lancashire's books for nearly 10 years, and has done pretty decently in his limited chances so far. It's also a bit harsh on Ballance, who is only what 17?

I'm sure there may be a few others on that list like that as well

Obviously someone who's only 17 is a case of the-jury's-out.

Never thought a terrible amount of Horton, TBH - but not terribly familiar with his recent deeds.

Wiki's take:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolpak_ruling

Basically a ruling in favour of Maros Kolpak means that citizens of nations with trade agreements with the EU have the same rights of residence & work as do EU citizens. South Africa & Zimbabwe have trade agrements with the EU, so England (as the only test nation in the EU) has been flooded by carpetbagging yarpies.
Hmm...this is off topic a bit but seems stupid that England are so straight forward against Zimbabwe and doesn't want them to play cricket but still has trade agreements with them through EU.

If it goes as far as to pressure a governing body to ban zimbabe shouldn't it pressure the EU to stop trade agreements with Zimbabwe? that would be more effective then a sport would.
