Are there many of these unfortunate players? and if so why?

I was just looking at the First Class record of Chris Rogers (NSW batsman) and got to wondering...

He has played 91 FC games and averages over 50 with the bat. He has also never played for Australia.

Now are there many guys (now or in the past) that have played 100 or more FC games, averaged over 50 with the bat and never player International cricket?

If anyone finds anyone, could they add why a player with such a great record has never played

Pankaj Dharmani 32 years old from India has only played 1 ODI . Average of 52.42 in First Class Cricket and 40.53 in List A . The guy's is unbeliavably unfortunate not to have played as wicketkeeper ahead of the likes of Ratra,Dasgupta and Patel who were all pretty average batsmen. With a record like it I find it hard to believe he wasn't given a go in Test or given an extended go in OD cricket. His highest first class score is 305 and in the 99/00 season he scored 1194 runs in 13 matches including scores of 70 , 305 * , 202* and 70*. I know you stated that the player has not to have played international cricket but I don't feel 1 ODI justifies the guy's obvious talent at domestic level.

dharmani was asked about on the forums before. apparently he was a fairly shocking wicketkeeper, and not good enough to get a place as a batsman alone. still a legend on icc2002 mind.

Can't see how he's never played more than 1 ODI as a specialist batsman, while the like of Raina, Mongia, et al have been given umpteen gos.

Rogers is at least a decent bet for Australian honours sometime in the next year or so though.

And what's more - if you'd told anyone at our club - including Buckey himself - in 2002 that he'd be playing for Australia they'd have laughed at you.

Rogers' record is inflated by County Cricket

It's generally considered that Jamie Siddons was one of the best never to play test cricket for Oz

Goughy Chris Rogers had a great season last year, but his average is slightly higher because he scores more runs in the easier comp, County Cricket compared to Pura Cup. Rogers plays for Western Australia also by the way.

me thinks if you look at pakistan domestic cricket, most of their fast bowlers have records that would be envied by other countries. 2 such examples are fahad masood who has 222 wickets @ 22.45 in 63 games and Wasim Khan who has 264 wickets @ 23.48 in 59 games.

I would think its similar to the story with Indian batsmen, considering every second batsman there averages 50+. 2 of the more popular names that come to mind are Amol Muzumdar and Sridharan Sriram both of whom have never played a test for India despite averaging 50+. Makes you wonder about the kind of pitches they play on.

You're right TEC - I remember this guy playing at Leeds in '82

Phenomenal fc record (and did well in one test series) but was nothing more than an absolute trundler who shouldnt have got anywhere near test cricket

One definitely comes to mind: Jamie Cox. He played a total of 264 FC matches for Somerset and Tasmania, scoring 18,614 runs with 51 100s & 81 50s at an average of 42.69. He has played more matches in the Pura Cup/Sheffield Shield than anyone else (161) and is the 2nd highest run scorer in the competition behind Darren Lehmann with 10,821 runs.

Siddons is generally thought to be > Cox, TBH.

Mick Taylor who played for Victoria in the 80s

I don't think he played 100 FC matches as Aussies don't play as much FC cricket as say England.

He averaged around 50 at a time when the Aussie team was at its lowest ebb. He did go on a rebel tour of SA but that was after he was over looked yet again for the 1985 Ashes tour:)

Pravin Amre of India
In his first 8 test matches (only ten innings) he scored one century and three fifties.

The century was on debut against South Africa IN South Africa in 1992. Donald, McMillan, Schultz and O'Henry were the bowlers. India were 38 for 4 when he went in.Both openers, Tendulkar and Manjrekar were gone. Azhar went just after the score crossed a 100. With number 9 More for company Amre took the score to 277.

His only two innings against Alec Stewarts England at home the same season were 78 and 57. The third fifty was in the very next innings against Houghton's Zimbabwe..

He now averaged 46 in 8 test matches batting at number 6 !

He went to Sri Lanka the same year. First game was washed out. He scored 21 and 15 not out in the second test and 21 in the only innings of the third.

He was never selected again to play for India in a test match. His career lasted just 9 months and he averaged 42.5. Probably the best for someone who scored all but 6 of his runs batting at number six.

He was also a brilliant fielder.

India was punch drunk with the young Kambli and Tendulkar and no one burnt effigies when this high class test player with a great attitude was treated so shabbily.

Ajay Shama only got 1 Test, and he averaged 66.76 in 130 FC matches, although he was a cheat.
He was considered a one day specialist but would surely have played more if he was not so clearly involved in the betting scandal.

How can you have the 3rd best average of anyone who scored 10,000 FC runs, and still be considered a one-day specialist???

I never said it had anything to do with his first class cricket.

He was 'talked off' as a good fit in the INDIAN ODI side.

I am not arguing about his first class record or his suitability for the longer version, am I ?
