Class of 2004

I think he means that Baugh wasn't considered in Neil's list when picking the wicket keeper.

Would say a big innings say by Ramnaresh Sarwan for example came from him and prevented a a clean sweep would still be seen as significant?
In a word, no.

He has promise. Hope he gets more of a go. Certainly not the best keeper of '04 tho. Not even in the top 3...
He has a lot to do to convince me he's Test standard.

If you have seen him bowl (not accussing you of anything) this year he would certainly justify a spot in the team.
Ahead of Kumble though? I've seen Kumble bowl in 5 Tests (or maybe 6?) this year and he's been very impressive.

I have seen Gillespie bowl in every Test Australia has played this year and he looked very good and was dangerous and looked liked like getting a wicket all the time when he was in India.

I agree about Kumble though.

I think Kumbles spell of 7-48 vs Australia on a first day pitch to bring them down from 111-1 to 235 all out was the bowling performance of the year.

Gilchrist?
Yeah I noticed quite a few people left Gilly out. He's simply number one when it comes to keeper-batsman. No two ways about it, in my opinion.

Because of Gilchrist's average of 38.04 this year with 3 hundreds and 3 fifties as opposed to Sangakkara's 46.27 against all non-Zimbabwe teams with 2 hundreds and 5 fifties?

Strauss is the only one I'm aware of with captaincy experience, so he gets the armband.

JL Langer
*AJ Strauss
JH Kallis
DR Martyn
GP Thorpe
A Flintoff
+BB McCullum
DDJ Bravo
SK Warne
SJ Harmison
GD McGrath
I think McCullum's keeping is so awful that it will not do. Not when the team is captained, as it should be, by Shane Warne, who has captained his country as well as his State and county, mostly with good results. Missing chances off the skipper's bowling is generally held to be bad policy.

Cheers,

Mike

Totally agree, solely based on 2004 form I'd give Sangakkara the nod. His overall average of 49.28 from 44 tests isn't embarrassed by comparison to Gilly's either.

My team:

1) J Langer (1481 runs in 2004 @ 54.85)
2) *A Strauss (971 @ 60.69)
3) Vr Sehwag (1141 @ 63.38)
4) J Kallis (1288 @ 80.50, 12 wickets @ 48.42)
5) D Martyn (1353 @ 56.37)
6) A Flintoff (898 @ 52.82, 43 wickets @ 25.77)
7) +K Sangakkara (1114 @ 55.70, 20 catches, 4 stumpings)
8) S Warne (211 @ 11.72, 70 wickets @ 24.07)
9) J Gillespe (314 @ 19.63, 55 wickets @ 24.89)
10) S Harmison (67 wickets @ 23.92)
11) G McGrath (47 wickets @ 18.46)

Anil Kumble v unlucky to miss out, if it was a turning pitch he may get the nod ahead of Dizzy. :)

Thorpe also very unlucky to miss out with 951 runs @ 73.15, especially when you think the nature of some of his knocks (90 & 119* in the second and third tests in the WI, 104* 3rd NZ test, 114 vs WI at OT) he always seems to make runs when the team is in trouble.

Agree with Gillespie over Kumble in most conditions, Kumble only played one test outside the subcontinent in 2004, though admittedly he did quite well in it :p
