The England Thread

i dont really recall smith or hargreaves being given many opportunities either....and its not like jenas hasnt deserved it his form has been better than average for most of the season. I would say the reason Parker has been overlooked is because England already posses 3 very good combative midfielders in Gerrard, Lampard and Carrick, which makes the inclusion of Parker unneccesary.

well even if Parker didn't have that fever he would unfortunately not be able to make the squad since Sven stupidly hasn't really looked at him over the past year.
Do you really think that Sven hasn't watched him in the past year?

I'm with Aussie on this one. He's been the heart of Newcastle's midfield really along with Nobby.

Scored a cracker on the weekend actually.

They may have not got much oppurtunities but they still got called up ahead of him. Jenas yes i must admit has been doing well of late, but Parker is still better.

Also yea those 3 blokes make up a very combative midfield plus Beckham & J.Cole, but thats not my point. I'm saying that in the backup to these blokes if the likes of SWP, Jenas, Smith, Richardson, Hargreaves, to name the entire lot could be considered as backup over the past year since Euro 2004, why hasn't Parker?

well i mean that in the sense that, he hasn't given Parker a call-up recently which would have enabled him to be in serious consideration for the WC sqaud.

As soon as Alex Ferguson decided to play Smith in midfield, Sven picked him, the same way he picked Peteer Crouch as soon as he signed for Liverpool and the same way he'd pick my grandmother if she signed for one of the big boys. This is the frustrating thing about Sven - BUT as far as Parker goes, I think the way he failed at Chelsea has given Sven doubts about his ability to perform at the very top, it could be argued that Smith was doing a good job in midfield before his injury (I'm not convinced, mind you).

Whoever said Hargreaves hasn't had a chance - he may have fallen further down the order, but he is always there ore thereabouts with Sven, yet the rest of the country doesn't rate him, I think it's just because he plays abroad - play for a big club or a foreign country, that's my advice for anyone who wants to make the World Cup!

The anomale here, of course, being that he chose Konchesky for the Argentina game, rather than Liverpool's Steven Warnock who would have been a better pick at left-back, unless he was injured, I don't know.

Mhmm, I'd say you were right tbh. He doesn't get the exposure to the English public that other players get - who is going to watch a Bayern Munich game just to see Hargreaves?

He picked Crouch when at Southampton, and dropped Smith when he moved into midfield.

Personally I don't rate him because he's never done anything remotely worthwhile in an England shirt.

Warnock doesn't play regularly enough compared to Konchesky

I think Parker is a better player than Carrick. Carrick is very good on the ball but i think Parker is a more dynamic player who adds more too a side. He has basicly been Newcastles entire outfield team this seasom.

Okay, he picked Crouch for the tour to the USA that I was on standby for, so many people pulled out, and everybody knew he was on his way out of Southampton then. Do you honestly think if he had stayed at Southampton, bottom 6 in the Championship, he would comfortably be Sven's backup striker now? Of course he wouldn't, I realise I was a little inaccurate in what I initially said but Peter Crouch became a regular on England's bench by signing for Rafael Benitez

Okay, so I was wrong about Smith, and now that you say that I do remember him being dropped, yet he has been in the squad since, despite being nothing more than an average Premiership midfielder, yet when he was at Leeds he probably was a better option than Vassell to take to Euro 2004 but Leeds got relegated to Smith was left on standby...

Konchesky has played 36 games this season to Warnock's 26. I believe Warnock to be a better player, and he has experience at the top level in club football, Konchesky is clearly not good enough to play for England and was woefully exposed by Argentina, is this the sort of player we want to take to the World Cup? He may cope against our group opponents, but we need someone who can fill Cole's boots if necessary, we are short on top-quality left-backs, but Warnock is a better option than Konchesky and Phil Neville, and Bridge hasn't exactly set the world alight this season. Warnock is also very useful in left-midfield, a quality any England manager should appreciate.

Did anybody see the March edition of 442 where they simed the 2006 World Cup three times and each time England meeting Germany in the final and winning it three times, winning twice and losing once? The third one being a 4-4 draw and Germany winning on penalties.

Take that Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano and co.

King to miss World Cup

Guess what? Another broken bone in an England player's foot. Who'da thunk it?!?

4 weeks sounds very optimistic to me. Certainly opens up the "utitlity" slot; maybe Neville (P) might finally make a world cup squad after all. Beeb report mentions Wes Brown, but with 4 centre-halves seemingly nailed-on a specialist seems a luxary to me.

From the beeb's site:

Can only think of Carragher, Terry and Ferdinand.
Ha. Assuming he's fit & his head's right I think you can guess.

Oh, Campbell.

I was thinking of the yet another injury as being the final straw!

Still, at least this injury means we won't have to put up with a midfielder isn't a midfielder and who cannot pass more than 5 yards accurately.

I thought King had done ok as the holding midfielder myself. Personally with Rio @ CH (as seems likely now) I would prefer the extra cover he provides.

I'd guess with King out it'll mean Stevie G as the last man at the back of a diamond, which (given his inability to tackle) seems a waste of his ability to me.
