I think he's played once.

He's been playing fairly well for Newcastle, but without the exposure there's no way people can say he should be in the World Cup squad.
yes but its stupid that Sven has keeps ignoring him, don't know if he will be missed at the WC but people like him should be in the mix when people like Richardson & Jenas get picked, hopefully our next coach realises his ability and picks him..

Yet he was picked for England on the basis of the label as a good player...
the fact that he has lost that label means that his inclusion is now not neccesary, not any more than a sub anyway.

if he keeps his form up and bridges injury doesnt heal in time, he could make a reasonable reserve for cole i would have thought, stranger things have happened, but i would say young is a more likely option personally.

Alan Smith has no hope of going to the World Cup. He could be out for a year!
:-O

AFAIC, I'd be very surprised if this isn't the squad:

Robinson
James
Kirkland/Green if Kirkland's injured, which he probably will be.

G Neville
Ferdinand
Terry
A Cole
Campbell
King
Carragher
Bridge/Young if he's not fit

Beckham
Gerrard
Lampard
J Cole
SWP
Carrick
Jenas

Rooney
Owen
Crouch
Bent
Defoe
Given Sven's tactics and mindset I wouldn't be too surprised to see Richardson there ahead of Bent.

Maybe Pennant might have a chance? He'd link up well with Ashley Cole. Could have Pennant on the left midfield with Cole behind him
Isn't Pennant right-sided?

How long will Smith be injured, anyway? Sven can't pick a cripple.
It was a terrible injury - ten years ago, it would have been a career-finisher. You may not see him play for a year or more.

Yup. Sven won't take a specialist reserve left-back and a specialist reserve right-back. He'll take King and Campbell as backup centre-halves, and he'll take Carragher as backup for all the defensive positions, plus either Bridge(/Konchesky) or Young.

Id like to see Scot Parker go, unfortunatly for him England are very strong in that are but he is having a relly good season and id say he is just as good as Carrick and Jenas

personally i would say he is playing as well now as he was then, he just hasnt been in the headlines so much recently and has been outshone by gerrard and lampard and to a lesser extent carrick, i would say he would still be very much in the mind of the next england manager whoever that may be, he has an international future yet.

yeah I agree... but Rooney and Owen are still very young, so it may take an injury for him to get a real first team slot.

well lets hope Owen is right & he is back playing for NC befoe the season is out
Too right. Aside from Rooney (and possibly Robinson) he's the player we'd miss most, IMHO.

Well i would put Lampard up there as well, but yes we desparetly need Owen and Rooney upfront, Rooney is obviously central to the entire side but Owen is a player who has big tournament expierence and i am sure he will get goals

Don't get me wrong, Lampard is absolutely world class & (next to Rooney and possibly Terry) an English player I'd have in any world XI, but we have players who're closer to him in terms of ability (Stevie G, Jenas) who could perform a similar role, albeit probably not so well.

I just meant that after Owen (and indeed Robinson) there's a bigger drop of in terms of quality of replacement. For Owen it's a guy who T*ttenham are trying to offload (if today's papers are to be believed) & for Robinson it's dear old "Calamity" at Citeh.
