Never mind the fact that English bookmakers have to cut the odds on English players due to English punters favouring them through nationalistic bias thereby increasing the possible losses should the unlikely happen and Strauss/Flintoff top-score.

No, let's just have a baseless rant about bias.... 8-)

Indeed, let's. Baseless rants are so much more fun...

Sangakkara at 25/1 would get my money. Though if the likes of Sehwag and Taylor can see their sides make the semi finals, 40/1 odds look particularly good as well. So hard to choose a winner with such a massive selection and such a long tournament - will the best batsman for the first month be able to carry that form long enough to reach the semis/final?

I think Michael Clarke would be my pick because he scores pretty consistently and is playing in team that can go all the way in the WC.

IMO, he is gonna play a huge role for the aussies in the middle order batting at no.4.

Any of the top 8 teams can go all the way.

However, there's actually only 2 extra games played by the winners than by the team that comes 8th, so I'm not so sure that it'll necessarily be someone from the winning side.

Not necessarily, but obviously the odds are better. If you leave aside the 70s WCs because of the small number of matches, the only player who has topped the runs or wickets without their side making the semis is Dravid in 1999.

In 83 it was Gower with the bat and Roger Binny with the ball. England made the semis and India won the cup.

In 87 it was Gooch & McDermott. England and Australia both made the final.

In 92 it was Crowe and Wasim Akram. NZ made the semis and Pakistan won.

In 96 it was Tendulkar and Kumble, and India made the semis.

In 99 it was Dravid with the bat and Allot and Warne in a tie with the ball. NZ made the semis and Australia won, while India only made the Super Six stage.

In 03 it was Tendulkar and Vaas. India made the final and Sri Lanka made the semis.

What's bias got to do with it ?

I couldn't care if the bookies in question were Pakistani, English or Uruguayan.

Another silly comment from Pickup.

Why is Bosman shorter than Sarwan? FFS.

Love that Yuvraj has dropped $20 since I placed my bet on him at $101
