A good first round to start the season, a lot of competitive matches and some good individual performances, well done to the winners this week. This season I'm hoping we can see the return of a few match reports, you don't have to do one every week or anything, just the odd one will be good enough, as you can see by the thread title they can be posted in here rather than in a seperate thread.

Anyway a good effort by all the managers to post their team this week, hope the trend continues throughout the season.

Sweet to start with a win. Monster effort to defend 180 in the 4th innings, especially after the first effort with the ball.

Cobras and Kent Play out Thrilling Draw

Defending First Class champions Cape Cobras got their campaign off to a shaky start after drawing with division one new boys Kent. Cobras went into the match with a few new faces, William Fitzstanford and Ben Allen were among those making their WCC debuts with Kandurata recruit N Rupasinghe also in the first XI. Captain Graeme Smith won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first on the new look Province deck.

Smith himeslf was first to go continuing his disapointing showings in the First Class game, caught off the bowling of veteran quick Martin Saggers for just seven. Jacques Kallis joined Frank Hammett at the crease, both with something to prove after poor first seasons. Neither let the team down here as they put on a brilliant 246 run stand, the resistance was finally broken when Kallis was trapped in front by former Pakistani all rounder Azhar Mahmood for 89. New boy Ben Allen didnt last long as the middle order failed to fire, the innings looked set for disaster when Hammett eventually fell for 146 late on the first day with the score at 343. Fitzstanford and Vernon Philander then added a valuable 105 for the 8th wicket as both showed why they could easily bat higher up the order. Philander went for 39 with the score at 438 as did Sandri and Rupasinghe and the innings was over at 438 after 102 overs. Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers with 4/94 while fellow Pakistani Yasir Arafat took three wickets.

Jacques Kallis Celebrates reaching his Fifty

Kent got off to a shaky start in their run chase, Fitzstanford and Sandri struck early to have the English side at 2/40, however Dexter and Pietersen showed the way as they both hit stylish half centuries. Next it was Llewellyn and captain Nic Pothas who combined for a solid partnership, the Cobras bowlers were getting visibly frustrated at the lack of wickets coming their way. Richard McLaren down the order then hit his way to 73 and a good response to the Cobras total was complete, with Kent all out for 410 we had a close game coming up. Sandri and Philander took three wickets each While Fitzstanford was arguably the pick of the bowlers with 2/60 after taking the wickets of Key and Llewellyn.

Cool, calm and collected was the order of the day for the Cobras second innings, Hammett again lead the way with a magestic 86 and he was assisted by wicketkeeper Andrew Puttick who made 54 not out. with 8/315 on the board Graeme Smith called his troops in, with a lead of 343 they were in the box seat to claim the ten points in round one. Mahmood took a further three wickets in the second innings to justify his selection in front of a number of new faces in the Kent squad.

Saggers takes the wicket of Vernon Philander

A thrilling run chase by Kent ended with both sides disapointed with the result. History books will put this one down as a bore draw however the closeness of the contest can be demonstrated in the scores. Needing 344 to claim a victory in 86 overs Kent fell just 8 runs short of the massive target, however Cobras needing 10 dismissals to take the match bravely took nine Kent wickets as they fell just one short. Pietersen again the hero with a brilliant 80, while Dexter made his second half century of the match (52). In fading light the last over was sent down by spinner Rupasinghe, bowling to numbers ten and eleven he had to fancy his chances of getting the winning wicket. Arafat and Saggers were able to play it out with the run chase having been called off in the previous over. Kent finishing 9/336 in an exciting draw. Philander with 4/77 in the second innings was the pick of the bowlers.

Can not believe we lost that. Chasing 180 should have been a breeze after the first innings effort. Good batting by Gow and A Morkel and Arnostram. Bowlers were Nel, Harris & M Morkel.

Nice solid hit out to get the draw. Good to see the top order in the runs again, and our new recruits not doing too badly. Would have liked the win though.

Yorkshire V Tasmania.

Jason Pike was coming face to face with the club he so proudly managed so long ago with a team with a fresh look, hoping to move away from the bottom of the competition ladder. After losing all 3 warm up games things were looking a bit shaky.

Yorkshire won the toss on what looked like a belter and turned out it was. Rudolph and Tendulkar made a magnigicent partnership and Rudolph put on his first of many hundreds for the season. Le Roux the last drafted into the Tasmanian squad for the season took 4 wickets as they eventually bowled Yorkshire out for 455.
Tasmania started their reply well with just about everyone chipping in with runs without anyone making a hundred but 5 batsman getting 50's. Smythe was the only bowler to get any movement and ended with a 5 wicket haul.
The second innings showed class again from Le Roux with 4 wickets again. No one from Yorkshire really looking as if they were going to challenge Tasmania. After bowling Yorkshire out for a measily 141 they made short work of the remaining runs winning by 10 wickets.

After 1 round Tasmania now are top of the table and have called for the season to finish now.
After the game Jason Pike was asked how it felt to beat his old club so easily and how good it was to pick up Le Roux in the draft.

" what a great game, after they got away in the first innings I thought we showed fighting qualities that I have not seen in a tasmanian team. There is alot to come from this team that could go anywhere now. It feels good to smash Yorkshire as they are pretty overrated as a club.
Le Roux is a great young man with a bright future and I cant believe we picked him up 9th in the last round of the draft. I think the other clubs must of been looking at the sun too long and missed him.'

Stoked with that effort from Warwickshire, a good start to my tenure at the club, really showed good character to come from behind like that.

Queensland vs. South Zone India @ The 'Gabba

Time robbed the first round clash between Queensland and South Zone India of a thrilling finish as the season got underway in a high-scoring season opener at The 'Gabba. Chasing 297 in their second innings, South Zone seemed to be content to play out a draw after falling to 6-139 but would end up just 65 runs short of a victory.

On a hard 'Gabba wicket it was Queensland captain Matthew Hayden who won the toss and elected to bat first in slightly overcast conditions. It was a move which looked to pay off early as the captain and Shane Watson combined to send the home side to 0-26 early. But after getting good value for their shots early, Hayden chased a full-and-wide ball from Brendon Guy and only managed to skewer the ball off his outside edge and into the waiting gloves of Prasad Reddy behind the stumps. Guy again struck as the home side threatened to implode early; Martin Love being caught by surprise by a brutal short delivery from Guy which cannoned off his gloves and popped up for Reddy to take another catch.

The home side soon slumped to the very precarious position of 5-76 just before lunch - Anil Kumble getting in on the act by picking up Andrew Symonds (18) and Jack Jenkins (0) to start his season off in the best possible way. But lower order resistance struck the confident South Zone side as the runs began to flow for the hosts - Rob Shearer, Ashley Noffke, Mitchell Johnson, and Carlos Gonzalez all posting scores in excess of thirty to provide great support for the last recognised batsman in Watson. Whilst Watson fell to S Vidyut twelve short of his ton, Johnson and Gonzalez managed to combine for a handy 37-run stand for the ninth wicket to allow Queensland to post a very competitive 305 all out.

The visitors made a much more promising start to their innings as captain S Badrinath and Venugopal Rao combined for a century opening stand. Badrinath in particular looked in imposing touch after a prodigious pre-season as he made light work of the toiling Queensland seamers. At the other end, Venugopal looked much less assured in his batting as many streaky shots very nearly caused his undoing on more than one occasion. On 35, it was late swing from Gonzalez that finally removed him as he was trapped dead in front by a beautiful length delivery. Ashley Noffke made the most of an out-of-touch Rahul Dravid to find his outside edge for six, but that only paved the way for an exceptional batting display from veteran VVS Laxman - the classy right-hander playing a delightful innings of 80 in just 81 deliveries. Both men departed within a couple of overs of each other as Badrinath fell for 71 to Gonzalez, and Laxman was done in by Daniel Zulch as he attempted to play across the line.

If SZI were in any trouble, it was averted by the wicketkeeper Reddy and all-rounder S Vidyut as the two combined for a rearguard stand of 131 following the quick losses of Murali Vijay and Bharat Chipli. Reddy was particularly enterprising as he raced along to 78 in 130 deliveries with all the swagger South Zone India will need to succeed this season. At the other end, Vidyut overcame an edgy start as he was dropped by Watson on eleven to go on to make a crucial half-century. Again late order resistance improved the score immensely as South Zone ended on 397 all out with a lead to 92.

Again Queensland lost an early wicket as Shane Watson was removed by VI Kumar for just ten - the lanky seam bowler beating the inside edge with a ball that nipped back off the seam to dislodge off-stump. But that bit of seam movement was all the South Zone side would get for this innings as Hayden played a tremendous captain's knock - peeling off a memorable 133* in 335 deliveries as he ensured the home side would post an imposing total. Hayden was well supported by Martin Love who overcame a disappointing first innings effort to post 79, before spin bowler Vidyut flighted one up and had Love clean bowled as he charged down the wicket. If there was any danger of total collapse after the loss of Andrew Symonds in the same over, Hayden effortlessly played the role of the rock as he put on frustrating stands with Jenkins and Yordan Stark. With the score at 8-388, Hayden declared to set a steep target of 296 for victory - the South Zone bowlers demoralised after a difficult day in the field; S Vidyut the only dangerous looking bowler with 4-78, whilst veteran Anil Kumble struggled to do any damage as he was taken for 1-141 in his 36 overs.

The South Zone innings this time started poorly as the top order failed to show any resistance en route to 4-115. Whilst captain Badrinath held the innings together at one end with sixty; Rao, Dravid, Laxman, Vijay, and Chipli all fell in quick succession as the Queensland seamers all got in on the action. With the fall of the captain for a half-century to Shane Watson's bowling, the visitors found themselves at 6-139 and on the verge of a very disappointing defeat. But again Reddy and Vidyut saved the day with a crucial 93-run stand as Reddy posted his second half-century of the match with a fantastic unbeaten 50. 65 runs short of victory and four wickets short of defeat, South Zone were happy to accept the light late in the day and end the match in a draw - Queensland collecting just seven points to South Zone's eight in an encounter which will be seen as successful for the visitors.

Warwickshire start season with a win

Opening their first class season at home, Warwickshire managed an unlikely come from behind win against Victoria on the back of remarkable performances from Ian Bell and James Kirtley.

The game started well for Warwickshire, with captain Mark Ramprakash winning the toss and electing to bat in front of the home crowd, a decision which seemed to be the right one, as openers Graham Foot and Nick Adam put on 91 together. This, however, was to be the highest partnership of the innings, as all of Victoria's frontline bowlers shared in the wickets to bowl Warwickshire out for a very sub-par 197, with Foot's 45 the highest score.

Things went from bad to worse for Wawickshire, as Victoria looked set to pile on the runs, with their opening pair of Clissitt and Gibbs combining for a rapid stand of over 150 before Naqqash Tahir dismissed both batsmen in a fiery spell. While Brad Hodge stood firm at number 3 with a neatly compiled 50, the rest of Victoria's strong middle order were ripped apart by Otis Gayle, who sent back David Hussey (4), White (2) and North (11) in quick succession. With Victoria at 5/221, Hodge was fast running out of partners, and Tahir and part-timer Jim Troughton saw to it that the tail put up little resistance, and Victoria were eventually bowled out for 291, giving them a lead of 94.

Needing a strong start to get themselves back into a good position, Warwickshire's top order provided them anything but, with Adam and Ramprakash both departing early to leave the home team struggling at 2/63. Graham Foot and Ian Bell, though, put on nearly a hundred runs together, both players bringing up 50s as they set about making a decent target for their bowlers. Undeterred by Foot's dismissal for 66, Bell continously found the gaps in the field, putting on another big stand with number 5 David Howarth, who was
unlucky to be bowled off a good delivery from Wise after playing strongly for his 49.

Ian Bell was the hero with the bat for Warwickshire

It was Bell's knock of 118, though, that put Warwickshire back in the driver's seat, with the batsman looking completely at ease at the crease until a vicious bumper from Peter Siddle saw him top edge one to the man at square leg. Once Bell had departed, most of the remaining batsman failed to capitalise strongly on the wearying Victorian attack, although Naqqash Tahir's quick-fire 33 pushed the final Warwickshire total from a possible 350 to 388.

Chasing 295 for victory, Victoria's openers once again looked set for a big partnership, before Akram had Gibbs trapped in front for 20 with a cleverly disguised slower ball. As often happens when one partner goes, Clissitt found himself back in the pavillion the very next over after James Kirtley's extra bounce saw him feather one to the keeper. Hodge fell soon after to Akram, and Victoria were floundering on 3/60. David Hussey and Cameron White set about rebuilding the chase with a stand of 50, but Hussey's enthusiasm proved too much when Gayle had him trapped in front trying to play an ambitious sweep that wasn't necessary with so many overs left in hand. White, however, buckled down with North to take Victoria to 169, but once North was given out lbw off a clear inside edge to Tahir, the door was open for James Kirtley, who responded with a battering ram. Proving too much even for the resolute White, Kirtley took the next 5 wickets to fall, ensuring that Warwickshire and new managed Andy Cameron kicked off the season with a strong win.

Titans begin campaign with close lose

Titans have began their campaign to gain entry into Division 1 with a closely fought loss against Karachi.

Karachi lost their first wicket at 1/105 and dominated the rest of the innings with bowling Karachi out for 289. Batters for Karachi were H Raza 63 (147), and T Ambrose with 78 (90). The main weapon for the Titans was fast bowler A Nel who finsished with 4/74 off 19 overs including the crucial scalp of T Ambrose.

The Titans run chase started a bit shaky after A Holland was caught behind for 13 runs to make it 1/31. However, T Darden (63) and H Kuhn (92) stuck around and made a valuable partnership of 120 to set the platform for the rest of the batters.

From there on it was the Titans match with valuable contributions from G Gow (99), M Aronstam (84), A Morkel (62*) and M Morkel (31), scoring 519, too which no body thought Karachi could come back from.

This proved somewhat incorrect with the Karachi men scoring 410 with half-centuries from S Bin Nazir, M Jenkins, T Ambrose and S Kabir. The main destroyer was once again A Nel with 3 wickets.

Set 180 runs the Titans seemed home if they batted like they did in the first innings. But this didn't count on some extroadinry bowling, ****ty batting and a quickly deteroating pitch. The odds on Titans scoring 180 runs were very low according to WCC sportsbet, $1.09. However at 5/16, it seemed Karachi were going to cause a great comeback. A 91 run partneship worried the home team to make it 5-107. But several qucik wickets made it 7-107. A Nel made the scoresheet a bit more closer wit 28 runs, but several more wickets to T Chaminda concluded this match with Titans losing by 26 runs.

Coach Matthew Luff said after the match "There are a lot of positives than can be taken out of that match, especially the first Innings batting and Bowling, however we need to not fall asleep like we did in the second innings with ****iness defintly being a large factor in losing the match. We just need to concentrate on the upcoming OD game and go from there".

Coach's award.
