4 Day - Round 7 - Match Reports

A dissapointing Yorkshire succumbed to a powerful Western Province outfit who leaped to the top of the Division 2 table on the weekend.

Yorkshire were blown out've the water in the first session on the first day as Nick Kumble ripped the top order apart and immediately set the tone for the match. With a wicket on the last ball before lunch Kumble had the home side in trouble as they limped to the pavillion at 4-71. The resistance was just as weak after lunch with Jim Schofield and Q Friend forcing the tail to collapse from 4-111 to be all out for 146 with Schofield picking up 3 and Friend 2 wickets. The fielding throughout was brilliant and the bowling mechanical as Yorkshire were all out for 146.

After a round of low scores from a lot of teams Province were keen to score a mammoth score, so they didn't have to bat again. Zac Birch started the innings positively as he smashed the first 3 balls of the innings for 4. Just as it looked like Province's powerful top order were finding some touch with the score at 0-124, three quick wickets fell and Yorkshire's ageing pace attack began showing some fight as the score was 3-125. This was as close as Yorkshire would get to Province for the rest of the match as the middle order rallied and pushed the score up over 200. Samaraweera and Jacobs then rubbed salt into the wound as the pair added 141 for the seventh wicket before Samaraweera was run out tragically for 94. Impressive bowling from Hamish Simpson wrapped Province up quickly but the damage had already been done as Province was 231 runs ahead.

Only a handful of spectators turned out on the 3rd day to see Yorkshire slump yet again with the bat. The top order looked nervous and only a small middle order revival from De Silva and Boxall saved Yorkshire from complete embaressment. It was the Tate show however that finished Yorkshire off as the young starlet took 6-63 to wrap up the inning victory for Province.

The win elevates Western Province to the top of the table, after Mumbai's upset win over Warwickshire. The side however have a tough stretch to finish the season as they come up against both Karnataka and Hampshire, sides hotly on their tails.

Slats4ever "A great game which once again proved that Western Province has the most depth out of any side in the competition. It wasn't our stars that won this game it was guys like Samaraweera, Schofield and Jacobs. We're peaking at the right time and I think we'll be good enough to take the title now".

i don't know what the hell that was from somerset, but it wasn't pretty :(

Well with 3 rounds to go, we play Canterbury, ACT and WA. We need to win 2 from 3 to finish 2nd, and given ACT are basically a shoe-in to win when we play them, its 2 from 2. No easy task :@

Mashonaland triumph over ND

Mashonaland went into the Round 7 desperately needing to turn around their dire form of late in order to avoid relegation. Northern Districts were looking to record a big win in front of their home crowd and continue blazing up the path to promotion. The Mashonaland team came together to pull through with a remarkable victory, thanks mainly to a dominating display with the ball in the first innings.

The game started in the best possible manner for Mashonaland, with star ND batsman dismissed first ball by Khan as he edged a catch into the slips cordon. Captain V Waragoda then made the unusual option of letting spinner S Mushtaq open from the other end. This decision soon proved a good one as Fleming and Hussain were back in the dressing room with the score on only 12. Gow and Smith started putting up a fight before Khan had Smith trapped in front for 8, and Smith soon followed suit, falling to Ramanayake, leaving the score on 5/36. Warner (28) and Reddy (18) came together for a 35 run partnership, the largest of ND's innings untiil Khan snapped up Reddy and Perera. Warner continued on with Swinburn (35*) in an effort to save face for ND, a job they did well until parttimer Rogers frustrated Warner too much, provoking a wild shot that had him caught. Mushtaq quickly took the last two wickets and the home team with only 136 runs to defend, with Mushtaq and Khan both taking four.

Northern Districts needed a good start to put themselves into the game, and H Lacey provided just that. He dismissed openers Waragoda and Ul-Haq with the score only on 6, and soon had Eaton caught in front for 23 and Mashonaland were facing yet another batting collapse. Fortunately, the middle order came together, first with Burns and Malik who each scored half centuries before Saeed got both of them playing wild shots. Arnold only managed 22 before Saeed struck again, and Lacey quickly followed with the wicket of Carver for 8, leaving Mashonaland on 7/227. All-rounder and lower order batsman B Rogers played one of his finest to top score for the match with 86 as he combined with tailender Mushtaq, who struck his second fifty of the season in a 120 run partnership. Saeed finally made the breakthrough, taking a brilliant catch off his own bowling to dismiss Rogers, and Mushtaq fell soon afterwards. The rest of the tail offered little resistance, and Mashonaland managed a score of 353, a massive lead of 217.

ND needed a big second innings in order to set Mashonaland a defendable total, and Holland (56) and Fleming (35) got the home team to a good start as they put up a battle against the opening bowlers until Fleming was well stumped as he charged Rogers. Hussain (41) played equally well for his runs in a seventy run partnership with Holland until Khan dismissed both batsmen in quick succession. The next four batsmen all made decent starts, but failed to go on to make any big runs, which was what was really needed for the home side, although Warner and Perera both played valuable innings that ensured Mashonaland would have to bat again. ND finished on a respectable score of 326, leaving the visitors chasing 110 to win.

The ND bowlers again got off to a stellar start, with both openers out for under five, and Eaton fell soon afterwards, leaving the visitors on 3/31, just as they had been in the first innings. The fourth wicket fell with the score on 35, and suddenly, ND were in with a chance. Burns, however, carried on his form from the first innings to notch up another 60, combining with Arnold (16*) to win the game for the Zimbabweans, only their second of the season. The win means Mashonaland and ND are now level on the table with 47 each, with the next three matches vital in deciding which of the teams will possibly face relegation.

Following the game, Mashonaland manager Andyc said, "The team just really showed up to play today. They knew it was an important match, and were eager to get the win they deserved from Round Two. The middle-order really played well, and Khan bowled exceptionally. Northern Districts threatened to take the game quite a few times, but just failed to come through with it."

ND 136
Swinburn 35*, Warner 28
Khan 4/47, Mushtaq 4/31

Mashonaland 353
Rogers 86, Burns 67, Mushtaq 57
Saeed 5/93, Lacey 4/82

ND 326
Holland 56, Perera 53, Hussain 41
Khan 3/125, Rogers 2/45

Mashonaland 4/113

Lahore FC Season Over

In a must win game against division six leading northerns at northerns, Lahore had it all to play for against the leaders after a stumble to their recent good form against Gauteng two weeks ago. Northerns were first to bat, and after the early breakthrough Rudolph and Gavaskar put Northerns in the driving seat with a 156 run stand, which was followed up by a 133 run 5th wicket partnership between unbeaten century maker Orton and Afzaal, Orton was able to get a little help from the tale to post a impressive 440 run first innings total. Khan was the pick of the bowlers with Gul injured and picked up 6/121 from his 35 overs.

The Lahore Batsman was blown out of the water by the Northerns bowlers with each of them sharing the wickets around. Only Thornley with 93 showed any resistance what so ever. With moral down after being made to follow on, having first innings hero Thornley removed for 1 wasn't the start that Lahore were looking for and while the rest of the batsman made starts none were able to go on and post the big score needed to put Northerns under pressure. Pointer took bowling honors with a marvelous 7/79. The 23 runs needed for victory posed no problem for the Northerns openers giving them the victory.

Northerns - 440.
Orton 129*, Gavaskar 81, Rudolph 79.
Khan 6/121.

Lahore - 241.
Thornley 93, Burridge 42.
I Anjum 3/42, S Shah 3/44.

Lahore - 218.
Ali 66.
Pointer 7/79.

Northerns - 0/23
Dawson 16*, Rudolph 7*.

Northerns 440 & 0/23 defeat Lahore 241 & 218 by 10 wickets.

nsw keep hopes alive

nsw put back to back wins against the top 2 ranked sides to keep there 4day hopes alive just with a good solid win over 2nd placed somerset...

nsw batting first and getting off to a bad strt , they where all out for 198 with 7 batsmen all getting starts but not one going on with it with exceptions to roach who ran out of partners. with the nsw bowling attack somerset always had there work cut out if the pace attack was to gel and it did keeping the english side to 185 with moore, roach and charles all taking 3 wickets each. somerset also feel to batsmen getting starts but not going on with it.

nsw havinga little lead really wanted to build and make it hard for somerset batting on a 4th day wicket, and @ 3 - 59 it wasnt looking good however solid batting from JP Duminy 84 (159) and R Aslam 113 (126), parmer and roach also chipped in with 40's to give nsw a handy 378 lead and somerset needing 379 to win.

somerset never got off to the start they wanted and 2 - 11 was always going to be tough and the only batsmen to put up a fight was j godwin with 99 (155) and p pothas with 73 (100), d ferguson put his name on the card with an impressive piece of bowling to take 6 - 59 of 19 and nsw win by 89 runs.

a solidperformance which sees nsw climbing the 4day ladder to hopefully put some pressure on the top 2 but has the run come all but too late. only time will tell........

Tamil Nadu made it 7 from 7 with another fine second innings batting effort. Just two teams remain unbeaten in WCC and for one of those to be in division one shows the quality of cricket TN have been playing, full marks to Karachi as well.

Cowe and Beasley, both 50's, were the only standouts in ANOTHER poor first innings battng display from TN. SA capitalised on TN's performance and set about building a good first innings lead. However it was in the 3rd innings, as it has so often been for TN this season, that the match was won. After a staggering 9-517 SA needed 430 runs to win. Although they put up a good show to reach 336 All Out, the task was always just too big.

While this win continues Tamil's undefesated season, the fact that they can't score runs in the first innings is a big worry. Lancashire secured another win and are far too close to TN, given Lancashire have drawn a game and also lost a game.

If TN win next round's game against Lancashire then they will almost certainly take the premiership. If TN lose then Lancashire might just be in the lead, either way the division 1 match of the season is Tamil Nadu v Lancashire in Round 8 Four Day!

"We Lack Clinical Finish," Says Mørk

A promising piece of work in the first innings was all undone as Tamil Nadu's batsmen surprised South Australia at Chennai. After Arjen Robben had taken four for 78 with his pace in the first innings, including Clissitt and Parida for ducks, Beasley and Cowe rescued Tamil Nadu from 84 for 5. Heath Axelby wrapped up the innings eventually, with three for 71, but 257 was going to be tricky. And when skipper Midlane, who by all accounts had a very disappointing game, departed for eight, things looked difficult. However, The Wall Rahul Dravid played more than his usual defensive game, as he flayed the Tamil Nadu bowlers for cover drives and pull shots which were a joy to see - well, for everyone but the Chennai crowd, that is. The South Australia fans watching at home, however, were overjoyed with Dravid's performance, which yielded 160 runs - the second highest score all season. There was precious little support, but Arjen Robben's 35 was invaluable, as South Australia made their way to 345.

That was as good as it got. The pitch had dried out, and Robben found little swing in the glorious Chennai sun, so Sehwag and Chandrasekh lifted Tamil Nadu to 78 for the first wicket. Partnerships kept going, as the South Australia bowlers found no bite whatsoever, and Midlane even used himself for a couple of overs in desperation. Nothing helped - although Khan Rangnekar, who got two top-order wickets, mainly due to expansive hitting on the Tamil Nadu batsmen's part, was perhaps underbowled - and Tamil Nadu amassed 517 for 9 before declaring, Beasley taking 77 not out to go with his earlier unbeaten 87. It was always going to be tough against Tamil Nadu's high-quality spin bowling, and edges behind to Marcus Trescothick were easily held - as South Australia crumbled to 149 for 5. A 91-run partnership between Keith van Jaarsveld and Nick Adam nearly rescued South Australia, but it was too little too late, as South Australia crumbled to 336 and lost by 93 runs.

Thus, the table looks as follows:

Tamil Nadu 7-0 99 pts
Lancashire 5-1-1 90 pts
South Australia 3-3-1 66 pts
Kent 2-4-1 49 pts
Qld 1-5-1 28 pts
Surrey 1-6 25 pts

South Australia thus seem condemned to a mid-table position this season, while Tamil Nadu march on, although their trip to Old Trafford in two weeks will be absolutely crucial, and broadcasted live on Sky Sports. Meanwhile, South Australia travel to Canterbury, in an attempt to keep up the challenge for third place - not that it matters much anymore.

Top report Hak! :D

Just one thing to note, Tresco was playing as a specialist batsman while Parida was doing the keeping. Yet people wonder why I get so cut about injuries :D

So how did Trescothick get a stumping, then? Hammett bowled a wide to second slip and Trescothick tossed the ball in from there while Rangnekar fell asleep a foot outside the crease? ;)

A tight low scoring encounter at the Bellerive Oval, ended with Colts taking their first win of the season, and possibly launching a late fightback, and Tasmania with little hope of gaining second place.

Bowling first, Tasmania's spin prodigy usman Sammels took 4 Colts wikcets in the first session of play, and a tlunch Colts were 99-5, with the other wicket falling to Rice. Darden(72*) and Andrews(40) then steered Colts out of trouble and after the other half of the spin duo Joginder Sharma took the last 5 wickets to end the innings Colts had totalled 220. 191 was Tasmania's reply to this, a score which could have been a lot higher, if some of the batsmen other than Gordon Banks (54) fully applied themselves. Having said that, Rice and Akram attempted to prove they have more than 1 string to their bows, with a last wicket partnership of 37 before Rice was cleaned up by Razzaq, who was the pick of the bowlers with 5-65.

Colts started their second innings alot better than they did the first, although none of the top order made 50s, they got starts and despite another 5-fer from Sharma they pushed their total up to 243, leaving Tasmania to chase 273. Ht openers started slowly, and both fell to Jones in fairly quick succession. after 2 more quick wickets fell, Charlton aimed to make up for running himself out for 0 in the first innings. Charlton scored a fluent 59 until he was caught by Andrews off Cunningham. it was an upward struggle for the lower order, and it was one where they did not succeed,. Although Symonds, Sharma and Sammels made contributions they fell 45 runs short, and Colts celebrated a deserved victory.

Guyana Upset Free State

Although Guyana were top of the table coming into the Round Seven Four Day fixture against Free State, Free State were the favourites. Guyana had bowler Engineer out and were coming off a less than impressive performance against Jamaica.

Free State won the toss and elected to bat first, and they got off to a terrible start. Satti (7-44) produced the finest spell of his season to have Free State on the back foot early at 3-10. Free State were never able to recover as Satti blasted through the top and lower orders, he received help from Zulch (2-33) and Clarkson (1-23) and Hussey was the only batsman to put up any resistance with a classy 54 as Free State were bowled out for 143.

Guyana were looking to put a huge lead on Free State and put the match beyond doubt. Guyana were also in early trouble and at one stage were 3-50. Clarkson was able to keep the Free State bowlers at bay with a resiliant 68 and he combined well with Jenkins for a 118 run partnership. It was the next partnership that broke the back of the Free State side with Jenkins and rookie Vernon combining for a 120 run partnership. Jenkins delivered, yet again with 101 and Vernon with 64. Guyana were eventually all out for 319 and a lead of 176.

In front of their home crowd Free State were looking for a big innings to put them back on top and expose the inconsistent Guyana. It was not to be. Perrera delivered in the first over removing Ambrose for a duck on the last ball of the first over. And it didn't stop there, he continued as he had the ball on the string. He topped Satti's performance in the first innings with a destructive 10 over spell that yielded 8-18. It was a surprise to many as it was his first first class game of the season.

Free State 143
Hussey 43
Satti 7-44
Zulch 2-33

Guyana 319
Jenkins 101
Clarkson 68
Ul-Hasan 4-65

Free State 52
Arendse 26
Perrera 8-18
