I'd love to see every country put out a specialist 2020 side with the selection criteria based mainly on domestic stuff but it isn't goin to happen.

But it it did, i'd like to see the team like this.

1. Loye
2. Hick
3. Maddy
4. Ramprakash
5. Craig White
6. Owais Shah
7. Tim Ambrose
8. Nayan Doshi
9. Dmitri Mascarehnas
10. Jeremy Snape
11. Stuart Broad

Not alot of bowlers there mind...and I'd waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy prefer Doshi over Monty. Jeremy Snape should also come in for Yardy imo.
Panesar, Broad, Yardy, Flintoff as the main 4 bowlers. Pietersen/Maddy/Trott can work out the remaining 4 overs between them.

Would prefer the aggressive nurdling of Trott to the less-aggressive nurdling of Collingwood.
I would prefer someone who's a proven international bat, who'll be captain, who is the better fielder, who is the better bowler and someone who has hit 79 off 41 balls against WI in a Twenty20 as opposed to 11 runs in two innings. Even domestically Trott is a slow scorer in Twenty20 - slower than virtually every other Warwickshire batsman in Twenty20.

In short having Trott ahead of Collingwood in a Twenty20 World Cup would be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen.

Trescothick for either Maddy or Benning & Prior for Nixon & i'll take that side.

Haha, Paul Nixon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. Matt Prior in 20/20 cricket. Have you seen his record for Leicestershire. He's one of the first names on the team sheet imo.

1) Benning is not an exceptional 2020 player, just because he ****s it in 50 over cricket doesn't mean he's the same calibre 2020 player, there are better English 2020 batsmen than him.

2) Ravi Bopara also, i would understand if you needed a bowling option maybe but you've already got 5 bowlers+Collingwood

3) Sidebottom is a hell of a lot better in 2020 than Panesar, and you already have Nayan Doshi. Heck even yardy would do a better job in ODI cricket than Panesar

Englands 30 Man Provisional Squad:

Anderson (Lancs),

Broad (Leics)
Chapple (Lancs)
Collingwood (Durham, capt),
Cook (Essex),
Flintoff (Lancs),
Kirtley (Sussex),
Lewis (Glos),
Loye (Lancs),
Maddy (Warwicks),
Mascarenhas (Hants),
Nixon (Leics),
Panesar (Northants),
Pettini (Essex),
Pietersen (Hants),
Plunkett (Durham),
Prior (Sussex),
Schofield (Surrey),
Shah (Middx),
Sidebottom (Notts),
Snape (Leics),
Solanki (Worcs),
Tremlett (Hants),
Trescothick (Somerset),
Trott (Warwicks),
Wright (Sussex),
Yardy (Sussex)

Not a majorly surprising list , when your going to pick 30 players , you sometimes can't avoid some of the players that we desperatly need to see in the 20Twenty squad. But the unfortunate thing is that the selectors could still go with the same dross that played , and surprisingly ran close , the West Indies a couple of weeks ago.

The first thing I want to know is how on earth did the selectors gloss over Nayan Doshi. The first bowler to fifty 20/20 wickets , and he can't even get into the provisional side. And Chris Schofield got in ahead of him? Are these selectors of their heads...

Anyway , on the positive side. Marcus Trescothick is back , which is a good thing , whether he will make himself avaliable for the actaul tournement is yet another matter, Mal Loye and Darren Maddy , at last , those three should be the top 3. With Trescothick probably at number 3?.

Jeremy Snape aswell. It kind of makes up for the lack of Doshi.

But all of this is sort of Irrelavent. When the squad is slimmed down , will the likes of Loye , Maddy and Snape get selected for the main squad? Will the selectors finally realise how bad Matt Prior really is and go for Nixon?

Decent squad really, a few players I'd have probably swapped out for a couple of others but overall not that bad from the selectors I guess. My team and 15 from that 30, assuming everyone is fit and avaliable would be:

Trescothick
Maddy
Pietersen
Flintoff
Shah
Collingwood*
Nixon+
Mascheraneas
Snape
Broad
Anderson

Chapple
Yardy
Loye
Bopara

I don't see much point in the selectors putting Snape and Maddy in the 30 if they aren't already penciled in for the final 15, which is the right decision IMHO. They have been two of the best Twenty20 players in the 5 years it's been played in England and thusly two of the most experienced and proven in all world cricket. I would have also selected Ramprakash and Hick and had them in the squad too, but I was very concerned that Snape would miss out so am delighted he has been selected.

Chapple? Chapple?!? Why the hell do people want him in their 15?!?

He was completely when he last played in Twenty20, I remember him being slaughtered by Lancashire fans on here. I don't want to see Anderson playing Twenty20 either, he's way too expensive.

Just to show why Chapple is ridiculous... Chapple last played a Twenty20 in 2005, his figures for that season were 22 overs, 229 runs, 7 wickets - yes an ER of 10.40 in a region where typically the pitches are more bowler friendly and harder to score on. His batting was also spectacular - 6 innings, 1 NO, 49 runs, average of under 10 and a SR of under 100.

TBH. I'd have picked both Schofield (on his form this season) and Doshi - at Mr Yardy's expense. What he does to keep getting picked I have no idea. As others have said wehter they keep the likes of Loye, Maddy and Snape in the 15 or go with the 50 over guys is interesting (I would but I'm not a selector) My XI would be:
Tresco (if he wants to play)
Loye
KP
Flintoff (if fit)
PC
Shah
Nixon (in 20/20 beter than Prior IMO and this tournament is in September so looking to the future isn't an argument)
Snape
Schofield
Broad
Anderson
And the other four:

Maddy (will open if Tresco doesn't fancy it)
Bopara (will play if Freddie isn't fit)
Wright (on his form this season)
Kirtley (for his "death bowling")
One point: I would always have two spinners in the XI. Anyone who has watched domestic 20/20 will know spin does well (and Sky's commentators tell you that every two minutes )

Chapple? Pettini? Bresnan? Yardy? ...

... Chapple? :-O

Do the selectors have some sort of dodgy vision which prevents them from seeing half of the players currently in the county setup. Doshi should have walked into a side ahead of Schofield, though I don't have a problem with the latter's selection.

I'm guessing Chapple and Bresnan are the token 'we care about the county system' picks who won't make it to the final 15.

Ridiculous that Doshi isn't in the squad when Schofield is, i don't care if he can't bat, Schofield isn't that great a batsman anyway and if it comes down to our number 8 scoring runs then there's no way we'd win the match anyway

Fairly decent squad IMHO. Seems to be a decent mix of 20/20 specialists, "Team England" players & a few ranodm Sussex players because Moores can & will. Only really Bresnan & Chappell seem totally misguided.

Doshi is the obvious hard luck story, but looking at the stats for the year it looks as if Schofield has outbowled him fairly comfortably & when you weigh in his superior batting there's a fair case to be made.

Prior & The Pres have fairly good cases as keepers, but Ambrose from Warwicks might've been worthy of consideration as a specialist bat alone. Samit Patel is perhaps a bit unlucky too; although his rather, ah, chunky physique may've gone against him.

Yep Cook's selection is not just laughable but confirms the fact that the selection panel still has absolutely no clue as to how to go about selecting a 20-20 or even an ODI side. Then again so is Ian Bells
