BTW Ponting's SR in 2000s is still marginally less than Zaheer Abbas' career SR.

It's fine by me if you vote for Ponting. The point of these threads should be to find out new facts about cricketers and not so much who wins the poll
Abbas SR 85
Ponting 80

Its a huge difference Even without era adjustment.

lol

You do realise Abbas averaged higher and scored faster than Ponting in an era that was slower scoring and lower averaging by nature?

And where are you pulling these stats out of? The average SR for an ODI ton has always been 90+ and was almost 100 in Ponting’s time.

It's not about stats here, Zaheer Abbas was an absolute gun against India in 1982 but other than that he had a decent ODI run.

Ponting in 2000s was something else, the way he took the game away from you in an imperious manner was never matched by anyone else who played against India after his retirement. He gave me more anxiety than Gilchrist and Jayasuriya.
Granted my opinion could be biased due to scars of the 03 World Cup, but then again he was the only cricketer whom I feared the most in ODIs.

Edit: In tests, there were no players who made me anxious given the slow nature of the game, until Broad took that spot later. So Ponting was the only cricketer whom I disliked the most.

With Zaheer Abbas, the question is the sample size? Is it fair enough to compare averages and SR when one player played 300 ODIs and other 50 ODIs?

There is also another question, Era. Is it fair to compare number of matches when one played in the 2000s and other in the 70s and 80s?

I feared Bevan the most in ODIs. I respected Ponting a lot, but thought Bond had a strong chance of getting him out (& he usually did).

The question is who was better not who you fear most. More batsmen would fear Brett Lee than Glenn McGrath but that don’t make him better

I must acknowledge before I make any argument that my knowledge of cricket pre 1990 is limited. But what I know is odi cricket was not very popular in late 70s and 80s and obviously less played. But the format reached its peak during Tendulkar and Ponting era, which is probably why when we talk about ODI cricket and World Cup wins, names like Viv, Ponting come up ahead of a Zaheer Abbas.

Zaheer Abbas played couple of noteworthy knocks against WI too. It wouldn't matter even if he didn't because the other great ODI batsman of his time didn't face WI at all.

1. One could say at 1980s Zaheer Abbas was having a higher average and strike rate than Ricky Ponting did in the 2000s.

2. You could also say Ricky Ponting played one day cricket in a more competitive era and he played 7x more ODIs and scored 6x more runs.

Also impact factor favours Ponting , talking about impact on the format ..

Ponting didn't just have pretty stats , he was the batting kingpin of an ODI dynasty that conquered everyone and crushed the dreams of every 90's kid who was not Australian.
Contributing heavily to 3 ODI world cup wins also adds to the greatness of a batsman and Abbas cannot chat to Ponting in that regard.

You can argue Ponting had a great team but he was a big reason why Australia was so great.
