Smith headed the ICC Test Batting rankings at year-end for three years in a row 2015-17. But Wisden's award covers all formats and has historically rewarded World Cup winners (Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, Jayasuriya, Steve Waugh, Ponting, Stokes, Cummins). Smith was banned in 2018 but would also have been a candidate in 2019 despite the ban extending three months into that year.I know this is a Wisden thing but it's a little mad that Ben Stokes has got this thrice and Steve Smith not at all, no?
Meh the 135 and Smith doesn’t even get a mention for his slew of innings that Ashes.Smith headed the ICC Test Batting rankings at year-end for three years in a row 2015-17. But Wisden's award covers all formats and has historically rewarded World Cup winners (Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram, Jayasuriya, Steve Waugh, Ponting, Stokes, Cummins). Smith was banned in 2018 but would also have been a candidate in 2019.
Wisden's rationale at the time:
2015. "The choice of Williamson in an era of highly gifted young batsmen reflects the measured brilliance he brings to every format of the game," said Wisden editor Lawrence Booth, who selected the winners.
"Others hit the ball harder (David Warner) or in more places (A. B. de Villiers) or even in stranger places (Steve Smith); others shone in marquee series (Joe Root) or bloody-mindedly proved points (Alastair Cook and Younis Khan). But Williamson floated serenely along, an advert for elegant understatement in a New Zealand team who could hardly believe their luck."
"His total across all international formats of 2692 runs is the third highest aggregate score, behind only Kumar Sangakkara (2868 in 2014) and Ricky Ponting (2833 in 2005)."
2016. "In all three genres, Kohli averaged more than anyone: 75 in Tests, 92 in one-dayers and a phenomenal 106 in Twenty20 internationals. His 51-ball unbeaten 82 at Mohali to send Australia home from the World T20 in March was one of the limited-overs performances of the year, typifying his Mastery of the chase. In 13 Twenty20 innings for India, he was undefeated seven times, and scored seven half-centuries. And by the end of 2016, his career average in all three formats was over 50."
2017. "In a year India topped the Test and 50-over rankings, Virat Kohli was the most prominent player across the formats - and seventh in the Forbes list of sporting brands, ahead even of Barcelona's Lionel Messi. Contemporary cricketers have averages, strike-rates and brand value, and Kohli was doing rather well in all three.
In Tests, his 1,059 runs came at 75; among those with 1,000, only Steve Smith had a better average (by one). Three of his five centuries were doubles; the other two were unbeaten. In one-day internationals, he scored most runs (1,460), and had the best average (76) of anyone who played more than ten innings; his strike-rate was nearly 100. In 46 internationals overall, he totalled 2,818 - more than 700 clear of the next best, Joe Root, and more than 1,000 ahead of Smith. It all contributed to India winning seven of their 11 Tests, 21 of 28 completed ODIs, and nine of 13 Twenty20s. And Kohli became Wisden's Leading International Cricketer for the second year in a row, emulating Virender Sehwag in 2008 and 2009."
2019. "While cricket is a game of numbers, his impact went well beyond his batting stats - though they were impressive. Across the calendar year, he hit 821 Test runs at 45, including an Ashes hundred at Lord's, and 719 in one-day internationals, at almost 60.
Rivals dwarfed his 50-over tally, and scored at a faster lick: Stokes's one-day strike-rate of 92 was the lowest of England's established top six. But those two landmark innings… 84 and 135, both unbeaten, the first propelling his country to a maiden World Cup, the second inspiring a national record Test chase of 359. They alone were feats worthy of breaking Virat Kohli's three-year monopoly as Wisden's Leading Cricketer in the World; in the award's 17 years, only one other Englishman - Andrew Flintoff in 2005 - has prevailed."
Didn't win an Ashes or a world cup though. .Meh the 135 and Smith doesn’t even get a mention for his slew of innings that Ashes.
He was at his peak throughout his twenties. When he first played for England in 1880 he was 32. Still a good player but not the dominant one he had been.So basically Grace had peaked years before the international game began.
