On that basis my understanding is that John Emburey would be top of the pile, followed by former Berkshire paceman Jeff Jones, known to his teammates as "The Clarinet Player"

The normal awards that everyone else has
Doubt very much that Murali could compete with Hobbs and Hutton Nufan...and you have Gilchrist far too high. Joel Garner unlucky not to be in the top 3 imo.

Other than that, great list, no surprises seeing the WIs dominating in the top 5.

Joel Garner has to be right up the top, given the "if everything were in proportion, I'd be 8' 6" quote"

State Vice-Captain
I quite liked CMJ's list.

Here's mine:

Bradman
Sobers
Tendulkar
Warne
Lara
Richards
Marshall
Murali
Gilchrist
Kallis
Khan
Lillee
Ambrose
Hobbs
Hadlee
McGrath
Gavaskar
Hutton
Ponting
Akram

with the sincerest apologies to the other Richards, who was to my eyes, even better than Viv when on song.

I didn't incluse te 20 biggest in the history of Test Cricket cause that would frankly be absurd! It was ordering my top 20. I actually forgot McGrath too.

After looking at all those lists it occured to me that most people abbreviate Garfield Sobers to Garry Sobers rather than Gary Sobers. Why is that when Garfield has only 1 r ?

Gary is obviously more appropriate, so let's go with Gary from now on.

BTW I think the confusion comes about because his autobiography is called - 'Garry Sobers: My Autobiography'. However, I'm pretty sure that Garfield Sobers always signed his autograph as 'Gary Sobers'. Perhaps Fred can confirm this for me one way or the other.

(OK, it's Friday arvo and I'm bored)

My understanding is that the man himself prefers the double r - his first few books were always spelt with the single r in his name, and presumably with that 2002 auto he got his own way

Decent book, but a bit reverential - hopefully some day we will get a balanced and objective account of Sobers' life
