Who should Sachin replace? Kaif or Yuvraj?

I think that Yuvraj should be dropped to make way for Sachin. Kaif did a great job for India playing under pressure and Yuvraj, on the other hand, has not done anything worth mentioning, to say the least. If Ganguly werent captain, he would be the first one to be dropped.

oh come on now. another ganguly basher!!? If the Indian team has improved so much of late a lot credit for that goes to DADA!

anyways I think yuvraj should be dropped for sachin to play.

(and i also wish they'd drop parthiv patel and instead bring in dinesh karthik)

Tough ask to expect a wicket-keeper to open the batting and wicket keep in such heat.

Sehwag
+Patel
Dravid
Tendulkar
Laxman
Ganguly
Kaif

?

Whatever it takes!!!
I expect Patel to open but if Australia bat for a long while, then I think it might be best if someone from the middle order moved up. Ideally, I would like this line up:

Sehwag
Dravid
Laxman
Sachin
Sourav
Kaif
Parthiv
Agarkar
Kumble
Harbhajan
Zaheer.

Kaif at #7 might not be as useful as in the middle order.

First and foremost - this team has an extra player since Sachin was added as an extra 15th player as a special case. Now that he is back, one should be reduced from the squad to have a normal 14.

Australia is already discussing who should go back once Ponting joins the squad. There is no reason why India should continue with this precedent of 15. But with some favourites being in poor form , you never know.

I think it would depend upon what the side was likely to be if Sachin was not available? Basically, who would open? The answers could be :-

1) Chopra in which case he would replace Yuvraj, surely. In this case Sachin too coming in could replace someone in the middle order also(Kaif ?)

2) Parthiv , in which case Yuvraj could go back to middle order. In this case Sachin in would surely replace Yuvraj.

3) Yuvraj again, in which case also the team would be unchanged. In this case Sachin coming in would cause a problem and the team would have to chose between dropping Yuvraj (Parthiv opens) or Kaif.

I am afraid, I suspect ganguly was planning on the third alternative (Yuvraj to open again) so we might find the decision based on whether Ganguly's heart will rule(play Yuvraj) or his mind :D

dont see how batting at 7 in test match cricket is too much different or makes someone less useful than batting at 5 or 6.
and its not like there are any other better options either....

Tendulkar and Sehwag will open, Patel at 3, Ganguly at 6. That is my prediction.

Tendulkar isn't going to open in Test matches, especially after coming back from a major injury which put him out of action for three months.

Anything below #5 and I believe Kaif's utility reduces to half of his potential.

I didn't understand #2. You mean Sachin would replace Parthiv?

I think that because of his experience, India would want him to open because it is unlikely that he will play "stupid" shots. and would better support Sehwag in the process.

No. I mean Parthiv Opens.

All three options are about who opens assuming Sachin was not fit.

Then to that solution you apply Sachins availability and see what emerges. thats what I have done.
