Who should bat at Seven for South Africa?

I tend to agree with those who say he's over-rated, but an aggressive lower middle order batsman with previous international success who can bowl some seam-up stuff really is precisely what the doctor ordered.

Four quicks and JP sounds the best balance, but Tahir is quite good in the ODers they won't want to leave him out.

Well he is a decent player who has the technique to succeed. But being a freelance cricketer (if I can call that), he may not have lived up to the expectations as compared to what he might have achieved playing consistently with top class cricketers from RSA.

Having said that RtD is still a decent cricketer who is way better than some crap in the current 15 man Proteas squad. A perfect no.5 or 6 batsman for this team who would have chipped in to bowl 4-5 decent overs.

Weird that the all rounder factory that is South Africa find themselves in this position.

Whether people disagree or not that will be the top five for South Africa. Tahir, Steyn, Morkel pretty much nailed on to be the 4 front line bowlers.

That leaves 6 and 7. Miller is probably in pole position for six, but its possible that Roussow after his West Indies bashing may nab that spot. Then its number 7 and tbh, I dunno what I would do if I was a selector as their pros and negatives for all options.

Lets start with Roussow or Miller at seven, they definitely would strengthen the batting, and over the years South Africa have bad memories of chases going wrong. In Tahir and Morkel you have rabbits and Vern has never done to much with the bat in ODI cricket while Steyn is a cow lasher. However picking a pure batsman at seven means you are banking on the four quicks and most notably JP to get through all their overs.

Now next option is Parnell, bowling options won't be an issue as you have six bowlers to choose from, although it does mean its a very top heavy side and you'd be fearful in a tense chase if they lost a few wickets. Parnell at one stage did look like he may be something with the bat, but these days, not so much at all.

The final option is the much derided Behardien, I don't rate this guy at all, he is a player who looks at Ravi Bopara and goes to bed every night praying to be as good as that. However he can bowl maybe 5-6 overs and has got runs in domestic cricket, maybe he is saving his runs for this world cup?

So guys which of the three options would you go for?

Maybe not...

Tahir.

Looks the best option on paper. Duminy has shown application whenever he's been asked to bowl. Ideally it should be Four fastbowlers and Duminy, but with Tahir in such good form, it's destabilised the balance of the team. Parnell and Berhadien are not going to help us win anything.

Bat Duminy at 7 and use him as the 5th bowler. Can't be worse than Parnell. Rossouw at 3 and Miller at 6.

Problem is no one else in the XI has part time bowling experience. Would be much easier for SA if they had some batsman apart from Duminy who had part time bowling experience to squeeze a few overs out of.

That's why de Villiers has had a bit of a bowl over the last few months. Unfortunately for them he was really bad at it.

Don't any of their specialist batsmen bowl in the first class games a bit? Graeme Smith used to bowl offies didn't he? No one else like that in the squad?

And oh, so that's a no on Amla? ****, he is terribad(using the word after about a year).

Yeah no kidding. Around 800 overs in domestic if my math is right. He should start practicing in the nets just in case. Worst case scenario.
