Tendulkar vs Viv - Even Viv is marginally better bat in ODI and Tendulkar in Test. Viv is a brilliant fielder and a tactician. Tendulkar is a way better bowler than Viv. (Infact Tendulkar would have been better than any woeful spinner WI managed to field post Gibbs)

Sachin was not needed to bowl his style, because India had many spinners and part timers, and WI did not. Sachin could bowl medium pace, off spin, leg break googlies too. Just as Sobers is more a bowler than his average suggests - because he was versatile - same applies to Tendulkar.

There's no guarantee his batting quality would remain unaffected by higher focus on bowling, sure Sachin could've been a good bowler I give you that but he never was and never had to balance it with his batting so it's just a hypothetical.

Sachin tbf was kinda clutch with the ball, especially in ODIs in the of 90s. He defended less than 5 runs in the Final Over, Twice. But don't think his bowling against Viv's really is a plus. Viv was borderline an allrounder in ODIs.

Viv's leadership and fielding capability is a proper point.

Viv was a good captain all said and done. Kept WI unbeaten despite big challenges.
Yeah he was a good captain, and an ATG fielder, comparatively I do think Tendulkar was not built for captaincy and was a average-decent fielder.

Viv

ABD

Their fielding prowess makes a difference

Garner

Ponting

Fielding and a big gap in ODIs

S Pollock
Close, but ODIs sway it

Wasim
Batting gets him over the line - very handy in ODIs (av of 16.5 and s/r of 88 was excellent)

name 12 better Australia ODI bats than Smith
Here's 13
Bevan
Jones
Ponting
G Chappell
M Hussey
M Waugh
Gilchrist
Hayden
Warner
Clarke
Head
Symonds
Lehmann

Some could also mount a decent argument for one or two of

Boon, Watson, Finch, Martyn, Bailey

This is not that Smith is bad, but more that Australia has produced extremely good ODI batsmen.

Viv's captaincy and fielding isn't mentioned enough when he's discussed as a Cricketer.

I mention his captaincy a bit but always get pushback.

I think his insane desire to retain the WI legacy, often to extremes, kept WI unbeaten whereas they were vulnerable the second half of the 80s and could easily have lost a series. Heck Australia with a stronger team lost series between 98 to 2007.

I think he was a great Cricketing captain (strategist, handling bowlers, inspiring the team) but a terrible manager of the team.
