Where does he end up in the rankings? Does he even make the top 30?
Without any doubt whatsoever IMAO the best white ball player of all time almost regardless how he finishes off.

Kimber placed him 25th in his book recently...CW had him 29th in last year's poll. So top 30 is basically his range

Kohli's leadership added extra spice to our pacers.

I remember how Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma were instructed to bowl defensive lines under Dhoni as per the field placements most of the time. Then comes Sri Lanka tour of 2015 and Kohli allows his pace-men to express themselves, Sharma and Yadav get hit for runs but also sent stumps flying. 2018-2019 period was when our pace attack became among the best in the world, and this would not have been possible without Kohli.

Yeah pretty much - did play in a harder era IMO. I don't consider Ponting a tier above but on a higher end of the same tier.
He's pretty far off Ponting level imo. Ultimately a batsman with a technical flaw that glaring and exploitable can't go down as a true all timer.

I have him around Frank Worrell and Clive Lloyd at this point, until Last year I think there was some hope here but the Australia series squandered it, I don't think he's top 30 or top 35.

This seems high to me. I'd assume Tendulkar, David and Gavaskar as batters, Bumrah and Ashwin as bowlers and Jadeja and KD as all-rounders sit above him at least. Going from corner to country I think you'd quickly find a load that he'd be behind, so probably around top 50 (not scoring for captaincy).

Second worst average of any test player with 30+ centuries.

Presumably Chef above him, though he did open in usually worse conditions.

Think he can still figure in a conversation about India's greatest five or so because of just how drastic his decline was and how dominant and nailed-on for ATG status he was before it happened. The separation is so discrete that he's virtually two different players on either side.

I'd rate him six for India on test cricket alone behind SRT, KD, SMG, RD, and RA but that's quite an accomplishment. As an overall player, top three after SRT and KD.
