Victoria's desperate off-season is threatening to claim another victim with Shane Harwood, the fast bowler, in danger of missing next summer's contract list. As a host of players including Matthew Elliott, Brad Hodge and Jon Moss wait to confirm their futures, Harwood is in a group of up to six sweating on new deals.
The Age reported Victoria's officials were frustrated by Harwood's injury list during his three seasons in the side that began with a hat-trick on debut against Tasmania in 2002-03. Last summer Harwood, 31, suffered like an AFL forward with a fractured cheekbone, stomach muscle complaints and a broken thumb, and has played in only 15 Pura Cup games.
"I'm not willing to go into details of individuals," Ken Jacobs, Cricket Victoria's chief executive, told the paper. "But all players have been spoken to by the selectors, those players who are likely to receive contracts and those who may have had contracts and perhaps may not be in the mix, but a lot of that could change, subject to what happens with Elliott, Moss, etcetera."
The decision whether to allow Moss's return to New South Wales will be made after Elliott's tribunal hearing tomorrow, which will rule if Victoria have successfully blocked his move to South Australia. Elliott requested a release last month to take up playing and assistant coaching roles with the Redbacks.
New South Wales are also interested in signing Hodge and his manager was due to meet with Jacobs today. "The Elliott appeal will certainly assist us [in finalising the squad] because if the decision doesn't go our way that means there are additional dollars available in our player payment pool," Jacobs said.
Ian Harvey, the former one-day international, is another unsure of where he will be next season and Tony Box, his manager, told the paper they were waiting for a "fair offer". Peter Roach, the wicketkeeper, is battling to retain his deal after the performances of Adam Crosthwaite last season while Simon Dart, the Ryder medallist, is expected to win a contract after scoring 1098 grade runs for Hawthorn-Monash University.
