Vaughan's Shirt Number 99. Why?

The story goes that after the bookmaking scandal Herschelle decided to wear 00 and add one every extra year he kept on playing. Which is why his number is currently 06.

Matt Prior wears 13, traditionally a sub keepers number in football, so maybe he knows his role LOl

And Flintoff wears 11, which everyone knwos is a flair player's number, I think its appropriate

Pietersen is 24 I think? Maybe this was his age when he was given the number

To answer the original question, my guess (and it's no more than that) would be that Vaughan wanted 9 but it was taken so chose 99?

You can't take another player's number until he retires, as far as I know, only a few numbers have ever been used twice by England
