Umpiring stuff

Swervy

International Captain
I've come back about 15 years I reckon since I was a regular poster here. Amazing to see how many names I still remember.

Anyway, I've got old and now I am an umpire. Just wondering if there is a dedicated umpires/umpiring/Laws of cricket etc section within the forums that I just can't find?

Cheers

Welcome back Swervy, there's not a dedicated umpires/umpiring/Laws of cricket etc section but plenty of threads in Cricket Chat surrounding these topics.

My work is mostly on weekends which makes it tough to umpire, but I'll still do the occasional game when I get the chance.

Also I think @cnerd123 and @GIMH and @Line and Length have all been/still doing umpiring at some levels. Welcome back and hope you stick around.
Gave up some years back when I needed a hip replacement. Have good memories and an "Umpire of the Year" award to treasure.
A couple of sour points, like consistently being paired with a self-centered idiot on the grounds that, "You are the only one that can keep him under control to avoid controversies."
On another occasion I was accused, by the Association's President, of being talked into a run out decision. What happened was the batsman, who valiantly dived but fell short, wasn't looking when I nodded in the affirmative to the appeal. When the batsman turned to look at me, I nodded again and raised my finger. I might add, I had a habit (possibly bad) of simply nodding when a decision was obvious. At the tea break, the President approached and said, "It looked like you let them talk you into that run out."

Correct. Still doing 2nd XI this year, my own choice.
You make it sound like others are doing it as a Community Service!!

"Well now young man, you have the choice of 6 months in prison or a season umpiring in the Cheshire 2nd XI League"

Haha. It’s more that at 2nds it’s very much the norm for these to be self umpired.

I'm a qualified umpire, stopped regularly doing it after I moved cities though.

My principle experience is being alright with most of the requirements but needing serious coping strategies for counting the number of balls in an over.

Swigs from a concealed bottle of whiskey imo. (1 per ball obviously).

Did you not have a clicker?

Mind you, I still **** that up when it's a no ball or wide. Even when calling them myself

My umpiring highlight is making the careers of Nicholas Pooran and Gudakesh Motie

in an Under-16 exhibition game between my club and a visiting team from Trinidad with Nicholas Pooran leading them.
Motie had him plumb LBW and I shook my head to thwart away the appeals of my own clubmates…because Pooran was smoking the ball all over the place ( I believe he was 13-14)…

I used to love umpiring when I don’t have game time…also, scoring
