For some reason Gilchrist vs Thorpe is gone. Thorpe (Graham) vs Trott (Jonathan) - Better batsman?

Actually that thread exists, the name was vague. I'll keep this

Thorpe, but then I think I rate him higher than most people would. One of the better players of spin I've seen.

Thorpe was class, played in an era of better bowlers worldwide and had a chronic back problem to cope with too. One of my favourite ever England players.

his 553 runs @ about 60 (2 centuries and 3 half centuries) in back to back series in Pakistan and Sri Lanka in 00/01 is one of the great English batting masterclasses of all time. he was the cornerstone of those series wins.

Thorpe, Cook and Root are streets ahead playing spin of any English batters of all time imo.

The Thorpe 32* when we arse twitched chasing 74 was a stand out, he looked like he was playing on a different track.

Thorpe had a time at the top for longer. But I'd question if his peak was higher than Trott's. Home and away ashes wins in 2009-2011 with 3 big tons in 5 live tests, either side of his insane series against Pakistan in 2010 where no one else on either side really scored any runs.

Trott was also a really consistent one day cricketer for a while, and was the victim of idiotic name calling at a time when England actually had a decent one day side. After he was dropped they got much worse for a couple of years before the post 2015 world cup revolution, and revisionists everywhere started ignoring the gap to simplify the story.

The Sean

Cricketer Of The Year
Yeah I voted for Thorpe but Trott's peak was fantastic - good enough across formats to be named the ICC's World Cricketer of the Year in 2011.
