Thread subscriptions

May I know why members are subscribed to threads they reply in, by default?

After enduring a week of getting my mail inbox choked with spam-like mails announcing new replies to threads I've posted in, I finally figure out the User CP here, and check the 'do not subscribe' box.

Then I still receive those damn mails.

I do not like labelling mails from cricket sites as spam, so I waste more time pottering about the User CP trying to figure out whats wrong. I've now deleted all previous subscriptions and have my fingers crossed I won't be receiving more spam. If that too fails, the spam filter of my mail service is the only option left.

I do not understand why subscriptions have been turned on by default? It is common practice in reputable forums to provide the option of subscribing to threads of interest, but not have them turned on by default for every single thread the member replies to.

I think that you'll have to unsubscribe from all the threads you're subscribed to.

You haven't turned on subscription - you're just not subscribing to everything you've replied to.

Not sure about auto-subscribe though.

Go to User CP, click view all Subscriptions on the right, then by selecting all the threads with the tick box you can edit whether you want email-notification or not at the bottom of the list.

In the emails you receive, down the bottom is a link saying "unsubscribe from all threads". Click that, and then go to User CP -> Edit Options and then change the Default Thread Subscription Mode to "Do not subscribe".

Thanks, Matteh and James. Did that at the time of my previous post in this thread. I still don't get why subscription is enabled by default.

No particular reason, that's just the default in the vBulletin forum software and there's never been a reason to switch it off. Its been like this for over five years now.
