Also Ashwin in the third xi? It might be the popular opinion in 20 years after people have a **** at his stats but it still feels pretty wrong imo

Yep, I was wrong in this. Back then he had a 7-9 run difference between his batting and bowling averages. Thought he had gone up the next level. A classic case of "wait till the end of someone's career before rating him" example.

An AT XI should be picked with players complementing each other by contributing a variety of differing skills

01. J. Hobbs
02. S. Gavaskar
03. D. Bradman ( C )
04. G.Sobers
05. V. Richards
06. Imran Khan ( VC )
07. A.Gilchrist
08. S.Warne
09. M.Marshall
10. C. Ambrose
11. S. Barnes

  • Gavaskar complements Hobbs coming from vastly different eras. He has faced attacks different from that of Hobbs
  • Bradman perfectly complemented by the taller, left-handed, stylistic Sobers, who I feel would raise his game to match DGB. To envisage such a partnership would be delectable. Sachin’s style is similar to DGB thereby leaving him out
  • With DGB in the side, one needs to select a bowling AR, thus Imran who could also be VC
  • Ambrose complements Marshall ideally (McGrath and Wasim being close contenders)
  • Barnes not only brings variety, but since we have no footage of him at his peak, we allow for that visualization

Yeah I reckon Gillespie is in a fair spot. Wouldn't say there are objectively better bowlers in the teams below

Exceptional coach as well from all reports, which I wouldn't have picked from his playing days. But that's neither here nor there.

Gillespie was a phenomenal quick bowler. Vastly underrated.
Would you have him in a team ahead of the likes of Statham/Willis/Bedser like hurricane did? Along Australians, McDermott and even Johnson were superior to him. All of those were atleast a level or two above Gillespie as bowlers.

lol.. Lillee does not belong in that conversation. His record outside of Aus/Eng is similar to Barry Richards. Warne, the same thing. Gichrist, yes. Barnes no.

Lillee, Warne, Barnes is the obvious Anglocentric bias.
Excluding someone like Barnes because you set a condition he couldn't meet as a rationalisation is a form of bias.

Johnson maybe when he woke up on the right side of the bed, how is McDermott better than Gillespie?
