Terrible names for cricket stadiums

I'm wondering how long it is before targeted advertising ekes it's way into 'established' institutions. Two people going to the same game, one at KFC Stadium, the other at Nissan Park.

Cricket grounds should follow the CityName Cricket Ground/Oval Convention. This makes it easiest for cricket fans to book their tickets there. Sydney and Melbourne got it right.

I'm not a fan of sponsors names. I'm also not a fan of commentators and media using that name. I never understood why Melbourne's docklands stadium gets referred to as HiSense Arena, Etihad Stadium, Marvel stadium, etc. What power does the naming rights have to enforce other people to use this name. They sign a deal with the stadium. Why then, does every other form of media follow on and use that name? Are they also paid, as part of the deal or is it something that the stadium can enforce.? I'd love to see a stadium deal with a recalcitrant population who refused to use the sponsored name.

Anyways, forget that....

Great cricket ground names that don't follow the above convention

Lords
The Oval
Eden Gardens
Wanderers
Gabba
Waca

When a ground has the same name throughout your lifetime, you kind of feel like friends.
Well people refer to it by the new name because ultimately thats what they want to be called, so it's their choice. You wouldn't apply that logic to humans, 'Sorry mate, you were born a Richard, forever you shall stay regardless', or 'Sorry, stuff your marriage, Miss Smith you shall remain'
Also the media recognise why they've done it, namely because they usually need the financial help, so ignoring it and basically abusing the sponsor is going to discourage the act in future, putting stadiums under financial strain. I'm guessing the media prefer reporting on sports rather than sports institutions folding due to arrogance.

Of course the rules don't apply if the owners are Middle Eastern oil barons/Mike Ashley

Very well put.

Bloemfontein's stadium, formerly known as Springbok Park, went through a variety of re-namings including GoodYear Park, OUTsurance Stadium, and my personal favourite - Chevrolet Park, which sounds more like an instruction than a stadium.

Now it is known as Mangaung Oval - an interesting one for foreigners to pronounce, for sure.

Brabourne is a great name too. Or Green Park in Kanpur

In fact, most names are great. The only names that sound pathetic are sponsor named grounds.
As an Aussie fan, there is just something about Edgbaston I hate. Having said that, absolutely love Old Trafford, Lords, Headingley, Sofia Gardens, Rose Bowl etc. Such a nice ring to them.

Edgbaston just makes me think Edgebastion, and therefore should be good for swing bowling.
