I did not really watch the full career of either Ambrose or McGrath. I tend to oscillate between the 3 as my #1 but most days I tend to think Ambrose 1, Steyn 2, McGrath 3. I understand it is mostly personal preference though and may well be biased due to whom I watched more.

My favourite South African player ever. I struggle to think of a player as widely revered and loved as Steyn by fans,opponents and his peers. Totally spent years as a young teen trying to replicate his action! Was the main weapon when SA had that ridiculous run from 2006-2015. Wish the injuries didn't rob us of some special moments over the last 5 years,but what a legend.

The tributes to him from around the cricketing world have been wonderful to see. I was lucky enough to meet him at a music festival in London in 2019 (it was during the World Cup and many of both the South African and New Zealand teams were there – it was a good day). He couldn’t have been friendlier or more accommodating to this grown-man fanboy who wanted to say hello and ask him for a selfie together. Absolutely top bloke.

Kind of makes sense when you realise how long Steyn felt the king of bowling (basically the entire 07-14 period).
Anyway, the best fast bowler of my generation as something more than a casual fan. Was something special to behold. Proof that you didn't need to be like 6'5" to be a gun quick.

Not only was he the best bowler of his generation but that innings in Aus where he made 80-odd despite being constantly peppered was the bravest batting performance I've ever seen.
