Stephen Fleming to retire from International Cricket

On my previous forum we had a thread celebrating or perhaps more critiquing players who so often got to fifty but rarely made it to three figures, named after a certain Warwickshire and England batter of recent years.

Fleming, though, was in a different league. I struggle to understand if the cases of players like Fleming, Redpath and Mathews are down to technical or mental issues, or just a statistical quirk.
