One of SA's future all-rounder hopes Dayyaan Galiem, with a superb final over defending 2 runs and 3 wickets falling in CSA u19 week recently.

More or less can call the enlarged SA 'A' squad with the 4 of the domestic teams announcing their squads for tomorrow's games with Knights and Titans not playing this round. Also quite a few of the players playing in the T20's probably would have been considered for the first test v England Lions but will join the 'A' squad later like Ontong, M. van Wyk, R. Mohammed Vallie
Sybrand Engelbrecht (would be on debut)

Aviwe Mgijima (would be on debut)
George Linde
Mthokozisi Shezi
Dane Paterson
Lizaad Williams (would be on debut)

Amla, Duminy, Ontong, Philander & Steyn in the limited overs squads.
So therefore Andrew Puttick, Dane Piedt, Rory Kleinveldt, Beuran Hendricks and Stiaan van Zyl probably in the SA 'A' squad for the game v England Lions.
No Kemp & Robbie P with injuries.

Highveld Lions squad v Cobras

Stephen Cook (c)
Rassie van der Dussen
Dominic Hendricks
Neil McKenzie
Gulam Bodi
Devon Conway
Thami Tsolekile (wk)
Dwaine Pretorius

Pretty decent squads that.

The position of test opener is on. Do they go to number 3 bat Stiaan van Zyl or proper openers. Probably be a trial run. Puttick has been unlucky in his career not to play for SA while Reeza Hendricks has looked to be next in line. First time call-ups for 2012 u19 WC batsmen Gihahn Cloete and Theunis de Bruyn. [ The Quinton de Kock, Diego Rosier, Prenelan Subrayen, Calvin Savage, Corne Dry, Lizaad Williams vintage]

Gone with Second for 4-dayers & Vilas in the limited overs for the keepers.

Elgar and Harmer get to improve their limited overs games.

Piedt comes back to international cricket while all-action leggie Leie remains in the squad from Australia.

Pacers look very strong with no Hardus Viljoen and Lonwabo Tsotsobe due to injuries.

Yeah, I've also liked Cook as an opener too. Cook unlucky to have never got a gig with SA and Puttick unlucky to have just gotten the solitary ODI.

But a solid SA A squad in my opinion.

What do you think of the WC squad? I think two spinners is too much, and I would have preferred McLaren over Parnell, but apart from that, it's a decent squad.

Cook going well against the Cobras, 128* and has got a nice partnership on the go with Hendricks.

Warriors also doing nicely against the Dolphins.

jan

State Vice-Captain
Cobras beaten by Lions. By an innings and 35 runs is some serious spanking. All gone for 140 in 55 overs in the second innings :/

Of course yes, called up as a replacement when playing a match for the Cobras.

With van Wyk scoring a hundred 12 years after his debut, Ontong captaining for the first time 14 years after his debut., it could be a good time to be in your mid 30's in SA cricket !:D

Cook with another good performance this round.

Yeah, I wouldn't have taken Phangiso. I've thought about it re: 2 spinners and if that was always going to happen I would have taken the all-rounder in Robbie P. Lopsy just not fit enough as his conditioning has never been the best so it was Parnell or McLaren or de Lange probably.

Back on the SA 'A' game. de Kock's fellow u19 team mates did quite well on their SA 'A' debuts - Cloete with a hundred and Theunis with a double.

Rory got the most wickets as he drives a length on that sort of pitch and bowls pretty straight which is crucial. Morris not far behind.

Piedt still with a few cobwebs.

SA 'A' v England Lions in Bloem. 2nd 'Test'

In R. Hendricks, Bavuma, Ontong, Rabada. Out Puttick, Zondo, McLaren , B.Hendricks.

Clear indication it is a shoot-out between Stiaan and Reeza to open for now. Morris and Kleinveldt keep their positions and no de Lange so after Abbott and Rabada they next in line for now.

Think we can see they are looking to the future post WC with Cloete and de Bruyn getting their chances and keeping them deservedly.

Looking at the young batsman with potential international futures in my eyes, probably majority are top order like David White (Warriors), Reeza Hendricks & Gihahn Cloete (Knights), Theunis de Bruyn & Aiden Markram (Titans) + van Zyl, Bavuma, Rossouw etc but that is fine with me. Think going forward SA cricket needs to identify the best all-round talent and quite clearly they should protect and develop Dayyaan Galiem, Calvin Savage and Andile Phehlukwayo so that you can maybe look to play Quinny at 6 and a quality all-rounder at 7 going forwards. So the top order batsman like above is fine. Think Reeza Hendricks can comfortablly play middle order, Markram & Cloete at 3 so not just openers.

Dupavillon, Maharaj set up emphatic win for Dolphins - SuperSport - Cricket

The Sunfoil Dolphins’ left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj sealed an emphatic 242-run win in dramatic fashion by brushing aside the feeble resistance of the final three Chevrolet Knights batsmen with a triple-strike as the hosts were dismissed for 126 in their Sunfoil Series match at the De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Sunday.

The Dolphins declared their innings close on 171 for three on Saturday and set the Knights a winning target of 369 in 105 overs.

That proved beyond the hosts.

The man-of-the-match-recipient, Daryn Dupavillon, captured five for 38 in 15 overs, while Maharaj took three for 49 to limit the Knights to a lowly 126 in their second innings.

Maharaj started his 15th over by trapping Patrick Botha in front for 25.

Malusi Siboto top-edged the fourth delivery of the same over and was caught by Divan van Wyk for a duck.

Two balls later, Maharaj concluded proceedings when Quinton Friend was caught at slip by Van Wyk for 4.

The Knights went to lunch on a wobbly 94 for six. They lost one of their lower-order stalwarts shortly after the break.

Michael Erlank was the backbone of the Knights resistance in the first innings, batting for 176 minutes for his unbeaten 55.

But Matthew Pillans, 23-year old fast bowler of the Dolphins, struck to remove Erlank for 7.

He had him caught at first slip by Imraan Khan, leaving the Knights tottering on 98 for seven.

Dupavillon, former South African u.19-player, struck twice in the space of two overs on Saturday to remove Gerhardt Abrahams and Werner Coetsee in a short burst, which left the hosts in disarray at the close on Saturday on seven for three.

On Sunday morning, Diego Rosier and Pite van Biljon attempted some stone-walling tactics for a while and defended manfully for 99 minutes after resuming.

Dupavillon trapped Rosier in front for 38 to reduce the Knights to 68 for four 40 minutes before lunch.

That proved to be a turning point.

The fast bowler, who operated with pace and swung it both ways, trapped Obus Pienaar for 7 shortly afterwards.

He completed a profitable session when he ended Van Biljon’s resistance by having him caught behind for 35.

To Van Biljon’s credit, he occupied the crease for 135 minutes and grafted valiantly to keep the Knights afloat.

Dupavillon finished with a match-haul of eight for 122.

Pillans took one for 31 in nine second-innings overs.

The Dolphins collected 17.06 bonus points, while restricting the Knights to 4.1.

In the first innings, Khan struck 127, his 15th first-class century. Cody Chetty batted 337 minutes for his unbeaten 101 to set up 452 for the Dolphins.

The Knights were not patient and disciplined enough in posting 255 in reply. Six batsmen reached double figures, yet only Erlank managed a half-century.

AB's test debut came after only 16 FC games. Will de Bruyn equal that? This is game number 11 for him, the Titans have 5 more FC games scheduled this year and South Africa's next test engagement is Bangladesh.

No, I think he's still behind Bavuma and Van Zyl amongst the batting reserves. Depending on what happens he could possibly be looking at a call up at the end of the year though.

SA have always been big on pecking order haven't they so it will be tough.

de Kock being a keeper & Boucher/AB shifting the gloves on it was always a good time for him and easier for him to get in and he did average 50+

Elgar (43.41), van Zyl (45.71) & Rossouw (44.83) have been around the scene for a while and averaged mid 40's & done well for SA 'A' so they are around. They worked hard for their chances. Many seasons.

Suppose Bavuma as a middle order batsman should be averaging more than 36.13 & that went up now with his hundred v England Lions.

Players who have opened for the majority like Reeza Hendricks (34.73), Gihahn Cloete (32.18) & David White (33.00) do have average that make you think what the hell ! But I do acknowledge that they are openers on SA pitches where we have had some very spicy pitches. That is why I've always backed Deano knowing how well he did to average what he does as a domestic opener.

Aiden Markram could do with moving to another side as when will the Titans get him more involved instead of Rudolph, van Buuren, Pienaar and even Kuhn who struggled badly for quite some time and Ryan Rickelton who just matriculated may have to wait to get an opening spot at the Lions too.

Would say those are the test hopes.Majority top order players that is why I like the idea of de Kock being in the middle order and working with our young all-rounders as future middle order players.
