South Africa team selection

I think he can be & like Brevis needs the right guidance.

I was impressed with his hundreds in Banger and was it in Durban v Sri Lanka?

My concern is these guys are full on in the T20 churn and aren't building encompassing bases in terms of technique and experience in different conditions. So when they face challenges but oh it's okay if I get out which is the attitude T20 brings.
I think Stubbs tries to play proper but he just doesn’t face enough of this heat often. I think he is going to be our cross format mainstay. Him, Rickelton and Brevis hopefully.

I will reiterate, if you ask me the biggest problems in the batting is Markram and Beddingham. If they don't score consistently what is there purpose? I would rather see them be replaced by talented youngsters that are given long opportunities to get experience and show their value.
Bedingham did top score today but don't disagree.

I don't believe Markram is an opener , he plays far too loose outside his off stump think he would be great as a middle order player, also there is a quality issue, he is really poor away from home.

17 Test matches away from South Africa he averages 21.88 , that is not good enough .
Still getting my head around this but then I thought is it a common trend with our more recent batsmen and you bet it is. I've always felt batting in SA in test cricket is the toughest. Whether it is sideways movement with slow turgidness or quick up and down bounce you can get. But to play around the world you need to be tough and adaptable to so many differing situations.

So went to look at our better players.

The only two things that allow you to be able to play around the world is ability and experience. Few batsmen, even greats, end up doing well in there first away series. The biggest single indicator of whether someone will do well in any particular circumstance is experience, is having learnt about and done it before. That goes for everything in life. Talent, ability is important. You need the basic skill, but when performing with people of equal skill experience is everything.

From our cricket perspective we have lost experience and the players have few if nobody to learn from, especially when it comes to batting. Then the few tests we have is also harming SA. And people like to talk about bringing in experience i.e. batsmen 30+ of age, but mostly that is experience in SA conditions which means less to very little elsewhere.

I`m repeating myself, but we have lost our continuity, we have lost the ability for great players with world wide experience to pass that experience on and help the youngsters. So the only option is to rebuild and regain that experience. That is only going to be by selecting young talented players giving them time, and then hopefully also getting more test matches going. I think that the current test side has got the balance about right. But I caveat that with the statement, that the minute Markram, Bedingham and/or Bavuma are not consistently performing there can be no rope given to them to wait for them to perform again; because they will be taking away the most precious resource from the youngsters. Time. Time to get experience and learn.

What is up with all the no balls? Fortunately we haven't had a wicket off a no ball, but how on earth can bowlers with so many overs under their belt be overstepping so much? And it's not like this is a new thing as we're apparently the worst offenders in recent times, and that's even with just playing two-test series.

Its been a problem for a while from all our top bowlers... I don't know why it just something we have with this group of bowlers. I think even Coetzee struggled with it.

Bowling little 4 overs (2+2) spells here and there in T20s cannot replace bowling regular long spells and being bowling fit but also being in a groove in your action (even KG has looked like he was over-striding yday and he is very rhythmic).

I'm still so hesitant to throw Markram away until we get more belief from others. We starting to get shoots though. I also don't think we getting much wrong in selection.

I think it's right we have Hamza and Ackerman at their ages on the fringes still. They deserve to be there on domestic performance and SA A. But they still seem like talented players with lots to learn.

Markram 31
Rickelton 29
Mulder 27
Bavuma 35
Stubbs 25
Bedingham 31
Verreynne 28

De Zorzi 28
Senokwane 28 / J Hermann 24
Breetzke 27
Hamza 30 / M Ackerman 29
Brevis 22
Pretorius 19
De Swardt 27

I think there is a difference from picking Zondo or even P Malan for the Test side when they obviously look limited and having a little faith in a guy like Hamza.

Thank goodness those days are over 😂 & bless him, good white-ball player but Rassie hung around too long in test cricket too.

To be fair Zondo for SA A in India, looked so much better than the likes of de Bruyn who Axar Patel made look very silly.

For better or worse, Markram isn't being dropped for a long time now...

Keshav and Muthusamy are going to be big players for this cycle. Big test for the batters on turning tracks.
Support seamers to Rabada also interesting.

Pace through the air?

Marco didn't play in Bangladesh and I just feel whilst Bangladesh was great we have to up our game for the other 3.
