The only two things that allow you to be able to play around the world is ability and experience. Few batsmen, even greats, end up doing well in there first away series. The biggest single indicator of whether someone will do well in any particular circumstance is experience, is having learnt about and done it before. That goes for everything in life. Talent, ability is important. You need the basic skill, but when performing with people of equal skill experience is everything.
From our cricket perspective we have lost experience and the players have few if nobody to learn from, especially when it comes to batting. Then the few tests we have is also harming SA. And people like to talk about bringing in experience i.e. batsmen 30+ of age, but mostly that is experience in SA conditions which means less to very little elsewhere.
I`m repeating myself, but we have lost our continuity, we have lost the ability for great players with world wide experience to pass that experience on and help the youngsters. So the only option is to rebuild and regain that experience. That is only going to be by selecting young talented players giving them time, and then hopefully also getting more test matches going. I think that the current test side has got the balance about right. But I caveat that with the statement, that the minute Markram, Bedingham and/or Bavuma are not consistently performing there can be no rope given to them to wait for them to perform again; because they will be taking away the most precious resource from the youngsters. Time. Time to get experience and learn.
