South Africa team selection

I only discovered this today (because I pay absolutely no attention to the IPL), but the remaining matches against the Netherlands clash with the IPL, meaning that we'll be missing a lot of our first-choice players. I'm hoping that means that the selectors will use this as an opportunity to bring some fresh blood into the side, but my fear is that they might just roll out all the has-beens yet again...
Imma guess that some of the up and comers might get poached into the IPL ahead of established national team journeymen and it won't matter too much

There aren't really any journeymen in the ODI side though. I'm not sure exactly who will be going to the IPL, but I'm guessing it will be De Kock, Markram, Van der Dussen, Miller, Rabada, Ngidi, Jansen, and maybe Klaasen and Shamsi. That's nearly all the core players gone.

Do klassen, rassie or shamsi have ipl contracts?

Don't players usually only make that sort of announcement after long distinguished careers? His was neither of those.

Good to see they kept Coetzee. de Zorzi in the squad. And the return of Markram, Rickelton, Petersen and Mulder. (Practically a new batting line-up!) Surprised to see Muthusamy with both Harmer and Maharaj in the squad. Obviously Bavuma as captain big news but everybody saw it coming. Hoping it helps him score more 100s.

No Verreynne? He was the only batsman besides Bavuma to do anything in Australia.

But I do like this squad as it shows they're actually serious about making changes rather than repeating the same old selection policies that have proven not to work. And I see they've sacked the selectors, which is a VERY good move.

r/cricket doesn’t seem to like this squad so that automatically means its a good one even if Ngidi and Verreynne being dropped surprises me

also looks like Bavuma isn’t going to be captain in t20s anymore which is also good

Wow some big calls there. Verreynne can feel a little hard done by though. I would love to know more about that call. Probably looking at something like:

1. Elgar
2. de Zorzi
3. Petersen
4. Rickelton/Markram
5. Bavuma
6. Klaasen (Wk)
7. Mulder/Muthusamy
8. Jansen
9. Maharaj
10. KG
11. Nortje

I think Muthusamy is seen in competition with Mulder than with Maharaj and Harmer.

I reckon you're right. Mulder would be the all rounder for seaming wickets and Muthusamy for spinning wickets. Although is he really a better option than Linde?
Linde was really impressive with the ball in India and Pakistan when the team was struggling, which tells a lot about his character , even as a specialist bowler he should make the team ..Then you add his explosive batting it's a no brainer...It really is upsetting to see him discarded , thank God for T20 cricket so talents like Linde can earn some decent money , cause how the national team has handled him when you look at his stats is quite simply disgraceful.

GIven the highveld venues, they may only be seaming wickets. They may be thinking Muthusamy, Mulder and 3 quicks if the wicket looks juicy.

Anyway for the Wanderers I do hope we give Gerald Coetzee a test debut ...The thought of Nortje and Coetzee in the same team cranking it to 150+ on a bouncy pitch sounds really exciting to me..Well to the SA fans atleast !
