My manLindsay Hassett's performance when one of Bill O'Reilly, Clarrie Grimmett, Ray Lindwall, Alec Bedser, Jim Laker, Hugh Tayfield, Hedley Verity, Alan Davidson or Fred Trueman was bowling for the opponent team (number of times he was dismissed by those bowlers in brackets):
131 innings; 6234 runs @ 53.74
vs Bill O'Reilly:
16 innings; 942 runs @ 58.88; 6 50's, 3 100's (4 times)
Hassett was famous for his ability to take on Bill O'Reilly and hit him over the top. He became the only player to score two centuries in a match against Bill O'Reilly. O'Reilly conceded that Hassett played his bowling better than any other batsman. O'Reilly once told his teammates: "Nobody has ever kept me out like that little bastard."
vs Ray Lindwall:
19 innings; 1095 runs @ 57.63; 3 50's, 4 100's (twice)
vs Clarrie Grimmett:
21 innings; 1009 runs @ 53.11; 5 50's, 3 100's (7 times)
vs Alec Bedser:
44 innings; 2083 runs @ 49.6; 9 50's, 7 100's (11 times)
vs Brian Statham:
6 innings; 420 runs @ 70; 0 50's, 2 100's (once)
vs Hugh Tayfield:
17 innings; 813 runs @ 47.82; 3 50's, 3 100's (3 times)
vs Jim Laker:
14 innings; 477 runs @ 36.69; 3 50's, 1 100's (once)
vs Hedley Verity:
11 innings; 364 @ 33.09; 3 50's, 0 100's (3 times)
vs Fred Trueman:
Only played one match against him. Scored 53 & 10 in two innings. Bedser and Laker were also bowling in this match.
vs Alan Davidson:
Played two matches against him. Scored 14 & 7 in the first match and 4 & 31 in the second match. Lindwall played in the second match.
Man I sure like it when my rating players very highly solely based on FC averages is validated like this. Bowes and now Hassett. Better than Larwood and McCabe respectively.Lindsay Hassett's performance when one of Bill O'Reilly, Clarrie Grimmett, Ray Lindwall, Alec Bedser, Jim Laker, Hugh Tayfield, Hedley Verity, Alan Davidson or Fred Trueman was bowling for the opponent team (number of times he was dismissed by those bowlers in brackets):

Just don't know how you keep coming with these, great effort. Look at Hassett's record against the 2 great leg spinners, Tiger and Grum. Yet he struggled against Doug Wright, whom Hassett considered a terrific bowler. I think Wright got him 12 times in tests and was perhaps the main reason why Hassett's ave v Eng fell below 40. The others being Bedser and the seam friendly pitches of 50/51 and 53. For whatever reason Wright's crazy bouncing leg spin seemed to worry Australia's best player of that type of bowling and is one of cricket's little ironies.Lindsay Hassett's performance when one of Bill O'Reilly, Clarrie Grimmett, Ray Lindwall, Alec Bedser, Jim Laker, Hugh Tayfield, Hedley Verity, Alan Davidson or Fred Trueman was bowling for the opponent team (number of times he was dismissed by those bowlers in brackets):

Yeah, Doug Wright was a pretty unorthodox bowler. TG Evans reckons he was one of the most difficult bowlers to keep wicket to. Along with googly and leg spinner, he has a fast delivery in his armory, which TG Evans called, "The fastest ball in England". In 1950 the Don wrote, "He always seemed capable of producing an unplayable ball which completely shattered one’s defence, not by guile or deception, but by sheer skill". Plum Warner considered Wright to be "a great bowler who on his day can win a match on his own".Just don't know how you keep coming with these, great effort. The most inexplicable cricketer in the game's history. Such an incongruous discrepancy between his average and reputation. There are numbers of great players who thought him a magnificent bowler. O'Reilly said the Australian tourists thought him the best bowler in England. Woodfull, who saw him immediately after the war, thought him the best bowler England sent to Australia in the previous quarter century.Yeah, Doug Wright was a pretty unorthodox bowler. Consistency might have been his main issue. He could be hammered when length and direction failed him. His former teammate Colin Cowdrey would tell a story of asking Wright about the best over he ever bowled. He nominated one he bowled to Bradman at Lord’s, "Every ball came out of my hand the way I wanted and pitched where I wanted. I beat him twice. It went for sixteen".
