Should umpires have the right to give batsman out for unreasonable conduct?

I was discussing this with a friend today and was wondering what you guys reckoned.

In cricket there are 10 ways to get out (obviously I won't list them because you guys already know). In soccer, rugby and so many other sports the referee/umpire has the power to evict a player from the field. If a bowler continually bowls beamers they can be banned from bowling that match, but I don't think there is a similar thing for a batsman.

Obviously in this day and age cricket is pretty respectful and clean-cut, especially as it gets higher and higher in rank. A fair bit of sledging goes on, but it is all in good fun. The ICC does, however have the discrimination code which it can fine and suspend players by.

It begs the question, if a batsman badly breaks this code (using the n-word, saying something religously offensive etc.) should the umpire be able to send them off?

I would like to hear some other opinions on this.

I think I read about there being some trial of this in grade cricket in Australia somewhere, red cards for racial abuse. Will try to find the link.

10 run penalty for every word spoken within a 5 meter radius of the batsman, or by a batsman within 5 meters of a fielder. :D

Interesting. It would have to be pretty blatant. In a way, there is a rule for this under "Interfered with Field", presumably to stop batsman hitting fielders with their bat or tackling them. If the abuse or what have you was serious and persistent enough, maybe the opposition captain could appeal to the umpire under this rule?

Barring physical attacks on opponents, I think the batsman being dismissed is probably excessive, and unfairly penalises his team-mates and the team's fans in that match. A suspension and fine, possibly both very substantial, afterwards is probably the way to go.

Great thread tbh. I'm stumped on what circumstances could ever lead to being the equivalent of a dangerous tackle or whatever in football. I can't see many people being stupid enough to strike another player and there are probably good enough guidelines in place to deal with these with these demeanours (as well as racial/***ual abuse).

Well you strike a player then I think there's a fair chance in cricket you could be detained for assault. Making you 'retired out'.

This is very true.

I forgot to mention in the original post, but I was thinking this kind of thing would happen more-so in grade cricket and such rather than international matches.

Suspensions can occur in grade cricket unless I'm mistaken. Obviously the fines are probably not going to be there, or will be proportionally smaller, so banning is really the power the authorities have.

Would make calling for a second run all the more risky.

Regarding the topic idea, It's not a big issue and if someone was ever given out.
Egg Zampel sent off 14.

I would be livid, Zampel should just face the match referee and be suspended in future games.

Can't unscramble that mess.

I am not sure about a batsman, but last week we were playing "last man stands" 20/20 and the ump sent our wicket keeper off  because he had appealed for LBW and followed up with that was plumb.
not those exact words .
