Scotty Stryris' bowling

do you guys think scotty styris is under used as a bowler in test matches, as a very economical bowling I think he is very usefull when gilly and co are smashing the nz quicks around.

Exactly. He's bowled a lot better in ODI's when he gets more then 8 overs, and since the NZ series, his bowling average has been in the 20's. Can't do worse than the likes of Chris Martin and Kyle Mills.

It often amazes me that we are constantly rotating through bowlers like Mills, Franklin, Tuffey, Mason, Cairns, Martin, Oram, and a whole heap of others. To be fair, some of those guys are better bowlers than others, but I'm going somewhere with this. The prototypical NZ pace bowler is generally someone who bowls around 130k back of length and tries to be accurate and get a bit of bounce (Oram, Mason), or someone who who bowls around 130k and tries to swing it (Franklin, Mills). Most of them aren't even very accurate. It seems incredible that Styris, who bowls accurately at 130k and swings it a bit, is only regarded as a part time bowling option.

Mixing with lots of 120-odds, or even a few over 140, depending on the bowler. They seem to lose their swing when they play on flat pitches, or pitches with lots of bounce, or without any.

Not too long ago, someone said that he's had a few problems with his knees, but he seems to be a lot fitter.

Cairns, Oram and Mills to a lesser extent offer more runs in the middle order, so there may be some point in playing them. Franklin is a decent swing bowler, but bowls way too slowly to be a consistent wicket-taker, but is a variation in the attack. Tuffey has just had one good series outside NZ, but seems slightly better than the rest. Mills bowls two bad balls an over, which is quite risky, and tends to no-ball a little too often. There was talk of getting Lance Hamilton in the side, though he's a little too old.

hmmmm styris's bowling can be quite handy IMO but i wouldnt say that it would be wise to make him a regular bowler, batsman would probably work him out rather easily and cart him about...... then again they might not.....its a tough one to call. From what i'v seen his bowling has been rather impressive i must say.

Cause, effect... He only gets more than 8 overs when he's bowling well. Utterly spurious point. That's like saying "Ponting averages very highly when he bats for more than two hours".

Handy, but nothing more from what I saw of him in the summer. Got a few useful wickets at the time, useful partenarship breaker IMO.

I don't think Styris is a particularly good bowler, don't get me wrong. My point is, what sets him apart from NEW ZEALAND'S specialist paceman?? He is pretty much the same pace as the likes of Franklin, Mills, Oram, Tuffey, and generally at least as accurate.

We need specialist test bowlers. Styris is a good ODI bowler and that's it, he's in the test team as a batsman.

And he's not even doing that very well at the moment...

he his a odi bowler yes he can be handy in test matches but nothing more in the one day game he is a genuine option because he his a wicket-to-wicket bowler(bowles straight) in test matches that is none effective because of the longness of the game

remember he started his carrear as a bowler batting well down the order at number 8 or 9 i think, has taken around 60 wickets and odi figuers of 6-25 some of the best odi figuers by a nz bowler but his test stats a less than emmpressive

The likes of Martin, Mills, Franklin and a whole lot of specialist bowlers get their full 10 overs even when they're bowling utter rubbish. For what they bowl, the team already has Scott Styris. It makes such bowlers merely excess baggage in the team. If Styris bowls more often, they would have the place to play an extra batsman, and they need more runs. His position is optimised this way. They need specialist bowlers who are really special, not just more Styris clones without the batting skills.
